On Friday, 25 October 2024, former President Jacob Zuma, now the leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, will address the media at a highly anticipated briefing in Johannesburg. This conference is expected to introduce the newly appointed provincial leaders, who will take the reins in leading various provinces under the MK Party banner. The event is scheduled to take place at the Capital On Park in Sandton at 12:00 PM.

Key Focus: Announcement of Provincial Leaders

The primary objective of this media briefing will be the announcement of the new provincial leaders, carefully selected by the party’s National Officials. These individuals are set to play crucial roles in strengthening the MK Party’s provincial structures as it positions itself as a major player in South African politics ahead of the 2024 national elections. Each leader will also have the opportunity to address the media and outline their strategies for driving the party’s vision and mission within their respective regions.

Zuma’s return to the spotlight comes at a time when the MK Party is undergoing significant transformation, with a focus on uniting its members and expanding its influence across South Africa. Zuma’s leadership has been instrumental in rallying support for the MK Party, particularly in regions such as KwaZulu-Natal, where the party has enjoyed substantial backing.

Looking Back: Zuma’s Previous Media Engagements

This upcoming media briefing follows several key public addresses by Zuma in recent months, where he has outlined the party’s goals and addressed internal party challenges. In a previous briefing held in August 2024, Zuma emphasised the importance of unity within the MK Party, urging members to set aside their differences and focus on the party’s growth. This call for solidarity came after internal divisions threatened to weaken the party’s momentum. Zuma reminded members that internal conflict could jeopardise the MK Party’s ability to achieve its goals, particularly in the run-up to the 2024 elections .

Zuma has also previously used media platforms to defend the MK Party from accusations of violence. In a June 2024 briefing, Zuma dismissed claims that the MK Party was inciting unrest ahead of the elections, stating that the party remained peaceful despite threats from some of its members .

Party Vision and Leadership Strategy

At a briefing held earlier this month, Zuma outlined his vision for the MK Party, addressing the systemic issues in South African politics and how his party plans to challenge the status quo. Zuma criticised the influence of money in politics, asserting that “those who win are those with money.” He explained that the MK Party would not hold traditional elective conferences, as they often lead to corrupt practices. Instead, the party would convene consultative conferences, where members from across the country would come together to review the party’s progress and decide on future strategies. This approach, Zuma argued, would ensure that leaders are chosen based on merit rather than financial influence .

The MK Party has already started deploying its leadership team across various provinces. Notable appointments include Dr. John Hlophe, who will lead the party’s national disciplinary committee, and Floyd Shivhambu, who will oversee the party’s structures in Gauteng .

The Road Ahead: 2024 Elections and Beyond

The MK Party’s growth in recent months has been marked by both challenges and successes. The party, which emerged as a major force in KwaZulu-Natal and secured the third-highest number of votes in the national elections, continues to challenge the results, alleging electoral fraud. Despite these disputes, the MK Party has positioned itself as a significant player in South African politics, with a growing base of supporters rallying behind Zuma’s leadership .

As the party gears up for the 2024 elections, this upcoming media briefing is expected to provide further insights into the MK Party’s strategies for the future. Zuma’s leadership remains a central pillar of the party’s identity, and his ability to unite the various factions within the MK Party will be critical to its success in the elections.
