Former President Jacob Zuma
Opinion Article By Tiisetso Makhele – I have always respected Cde Zuma, and knew that despite his mistakes, he was an anti-Apartheid activist who sacrificed his life for our freedom. It was the respect I accorded, continue to accord many of our cadres.
In 2022 I warned of how the offspring of most leaders behave in the movement and government. I specifically pointed out the snobbish Duduzile as one such offspring.
Zuma
Perhaps it is old age, but over the last few years we have seen Cde Zuma turn his kids, especially Duduzane and Duduzile, into his political counselors, much to the detriment of his standing in society. Yesterday was the pinnacle of this flawed upbringing of children, and there went out the legacy of Zuma, the freedom fighter.
Cde Zuma is wrong, and I don’t think the ancestors of the ANC will forgive him, for using the MK name and logo for a clumsy formation formed by his daughter. He has literally sold the majestic MK brand, and the revolution, to please his daughter and vent out his anger against President Ramaphosa. That is unforgivable.
Had Cde Zuma only indicated that he won’t campaign, for reasons he has advanced in his statement, and left it there, my respect for him would.have been intact. In fact, he wouldn’t have been the first to do so. Cde Mbeki has openly stated, not once, that won’t campaign for the ANC. In fact, he even invited EFF to his home in the height of an election campaign. Today he is forgiven.
It is wrong and insulting for Cde Zuma to mobilize the masses to support another formation, when he still claims to belong to the ANC. This is unforgivable.
Cde Zuma is right about the influence of external forces in the ANC, but he is wrong to state that that only happened after he left office. Since the sellout negotiations, as well as throughout the presidencies of Mandela, Mbeki, Zuma himself and President Ramaphosa now, such forces have been alive. It is downright grandstanding to seek to cleanse yourself at the expense of others.
I sincerely hope Cde Zuma will awaken from this hallucination, and assuage his anger and bitterness towards the current leadership, and realize that the ANC is bigger than any other leader, including himself or President Ramaphosa. I am disappointed with Cde Zuma.
I sincerely hope the ANC will learn that it is valuable to jealously guard its songs, chants (like dubul ibhunu, Kill the Farmer, etc), MK essentials, history, etc as a liberation movement.
