Jacob Zuma has Appointed Dr. Thanti Mthanti as Treasurer General of uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party)

uMkhonto weSizwe Party President Jacob Zuma has appointed Dr. Thanti Mthanti, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, as the party’s Treasurer General. Dr. Mthanti, who holds a PhD in Finance from the University of the Witwatersrand, previously served as a member of the National High Command and chaired its Communications sub-committee. He succeeds Menzi Magubane in this role. Additionally, Zuma has appointed Nhlamulo Ndhlela as the party’s full-time National Spokesperson, expressing confidence in their abilities to strengthen the organisation.
In a statement, Zuma emphasised the importance of these appointments in bolstering the party’s leadership:
“In the continued pursuit to strengthen the Organisation, the President, H.E. Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma has, in consultation with the MK Party National High Command, appointed Commander Dr. Thanti Mthanti as the Treasurer General of uMkhonto weSizwe with immediate effect. Commander Thanti has served the organisation diligently, executing different tasks since its inception. At the time of this appointment, Dr. Mthanti was serving as a member of the National High Command and as Chairperson of the Communications sub-committee of the NHC. Commander Mthanti will assume the roles and responsibilities of the Treasurer General as prescribed by the Constitution of the MK Party.”
Zuma also highlighted Ndhlela’s new role:
“The Commander General, President Zuma, has also given a command and appointed Commander Nhlamulo Ndhlela on a full-time basis as an official in the role of National Spokesperson. He will participate as a member of the Top 8 and the National High Command. This decision is to ensure the further strengthening of the Communications machinery of the Party and to shape its strategic direction. The President has confidence in Commander Ndhlela to continue to execute his responsibilities with the astuteness he continually demonstrates.”
These appointments come amid a series of leadership changes within the MK Party. Recently, Zuma appointed Joe Ndhlela as the party’s National Organiser, a position previously held by former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu, who has since been appointed as the MK Party’s Secretary-General.
In July, Zuma relieved the party’s then Treasurer-General, Danisa Zulu, of her duties. This decision came shortly after Secretary-General Arthur Zwane resigned with immediate effect, reportedly due to internal pressures. Zuma then appointed Menzi Magubane as the new Treasurer-General of the MK Party; he has now been replaced by Dr. Mthanti.
Floyd Shivambu, the party’s Secretary-General, extended his congratulations to Dr. Mthanti, stating:
“Congratulations and welcome Dr. Thanti Mthanti, the Treasurer General of uMkhonto weSizwe. Our TG has a PhD in Finance from Wits University, which makes him the most qualified TG of any organisation in South Africa. Dr. Thanti is a Senior Lecturer at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town. Thanti teaches Risk Management, Entrepreneurship/Entrepreneurial Finance and Venture Capital. uMkhonto is assembling the best of the best! #GwazaMkhontoGwaza!”
The MK Party, established in December 2023, has experienced rapid growth and significant leadership restructuring. The party’s National High Command, its highest decision-making body, comprises eight officials and 45 additional members. This structure aims to build and expand the organisation ahead of future elections.
