Hawks Seek Public Help After Cash-In-Transit Robbery in Mhala, Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga – The Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Gerber, is urgently requesting the public’s assistance in providing information that can lead to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of firearms and money stolen during a violent cash-in-transit robbery. The incident occurred on Saturday, 8 June 2024, at approximately 16:05, in the Mhala policing area.
According to Police Spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, the armoured vehicle belonging to Fidelity Security Company was transporting cash from various retail outlets in Thulamahashe to its depot when a silver Mercedes Benz rammed into it. The escort vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie, was ambushed by two VW Polos—one white and one silver. The attackers shot and injured the driver, who was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. Two rifles were also taken from the security team.
The two VW Polos then pursued the armoured vehicle and opened fire until it came to a halt. The assailants, described as approximately 20 individuals speaking Zulu and dressed in balaclavas, gloves, and bulletproof vests, forced the vehicle’s crew into nearby bushes before seizing their firearms. The attackers then used explosives to blow up the armoured vehicle twice, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. They fled the scene in the direction of Dwarsloop.
Amid the chaos, community members reportedly descended upon the crime scene, looting the remaining loose money scattered around.
A multi-disciplinary team including experts from the Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, Mhala SAPS and Detectives, Achornhoek LCRC, Nelspruit Bomb Disposal, and Fidelity Security are currently investigating the case. A docket for cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, and armed robbery has been registered.
Major General Gerber fervently appeals to anyone with information to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Warrant Officer Albert De Lange, at 071 481 2815. He assures the public that any information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
“The Hawks are urging the public to refrain from contaminating the crime scene as there might be undetonated explosives that pose a serious danger,” reiterated Major General Gerber. “Anyone who knows the suspects or has any pertinent information should immediately report to the authorities or directly contact the investigator.”
