Zulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini
In a significant development for the Zulu nation, King Misuzulu KaZwelithini has brought back Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi to the key role of traditional prime minister. This comes just a year after the king let him go from the position, which stayed empty during that time. The re-appointment happened late in the evening at the eMashobeni royal palace in Pongola, setting the stage for the upcoming Umkhosi Woselwa ceremony.
This decision marks a fresh chapter in the leadership of the Zulu monarchy, blending tradition with modern governance needs. It also highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen unity within the royal family and the broader community. As South Africans follow these events closely, the move could influence cultural and political dynamics in KwaZulu-Natal.
Details of the Re-Appointment Ceremony
The king made the announcement around 8 pm in front of senior royal family members. An oath of office was given to Buthelezi by Canon Hamilton Mbatha, who serves as the royal chaplain. This swearing-in took place at the Mashobeni royal palace, adding a formal touch to the occasion.
The re-appointment takes effect from 2 December 2025, showing a quick return to action for Buthelezi. It comes right before the annual Umkhosi Woselwa, a important cultural event known as the ceremony of the first fruits, where the Zulu people celebrate their heritage and unity. This timing suggests the king wants strong leadership in place for such key traditions.
Background on Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi is no stranger to leadership roles. He currently works as the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the KwaZulu-Natal government. This government is a partnership made up of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and National Freedom Party (NFP), showing his skill in working across different groups.
Buthelezi is a senior figure in the IFP and once served as mayor of the Zululand district municipality. His background includes deep ties to Zulu traditions and politics, making him a fitting choice for this cultural post. He first took on the traditional prime minister role in January 2024, stepping in after the passing of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in September 2023. Prince Mangosuthu had held the position for nearly 70 years under three kings, starting from 1954, setting a long legacy for the role.
The traditional prime minister acts as the chief helper to the king, handling executive tasks, coordination, and oversight of the Zulu kingdom’s affairs. This includes representing the king in government matters, administration, and development projects, ensuring everything runs smoothly under the monarch’s guidance.
The Events Leading to the Dismissal and Re-Appointment
King Misuzulu let Buthelezi go from the position on 25 December 2024, without giving reasons at the time. Later insights showed that the dismissal came from concerns over actions that seemed to weaken the king’s authority and the stability of the KwaZulu-Natal coalition government. Some felt Buthelezi was using the role to boost his own standing in ways that caused friction.
Key issues included tensions with the Ingonyama Trust Board (ITB), where Buthelezi serves as a trustee and chairperson. The ITB looks after nearly three million hectares of land for the Zulu people. Disputes arose when the king did not follow through on instructions from Buthelezi, such as hiring service providers for an audit. This led to a breakdown in their working relationship, and the king also suspended some ITB members, including the CEO and CFO, for possible breaches of financial rules.
Despite these challenges, the re-appointment a year later points to a possible reconciliation or a need for experienced leadership. The king called for unity when seeking a successor after the dismissal, and this move might reflect resolved differences or shifted priorities. It also follows mixed feelings from the public and royal circles about Buthelezi’s first appointment in 2024, where some welcomed his energy while others worried about political ties.
Introduction of the Prime Minister Executive Council
In a first for Zulu history, the king has set up a five-member Prime Minister Executive Council, with Buthelezi as the chair. This group includes the deputy traditional prime minister, the king’s representative to the House of Traditional Leaders, the royal chancellor, and the head of the king’s private office.
The council acts as the main governing body under the king. It must approve all plans, programmes, and policies before they start. This setup ensures that everything aligns with the king’s vision for culture, administration, and development. It also watches over compliance, reporting, and decisions, adding a layer of checks to prevent past issues. By creating this council, the king seems to be tightening control while sharing duties, which could help avoid future conflicts.
The Deputy Traditional Prime Minister and Broader Implications
Supporting Buthelezi in his role is the deputy traditional prime minister, Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza. Chiliza leads the MK Party in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature based in Pietermaritzburg, bringing another political angle to the team.
This re-appointment could have wider effects on politics in KwaZulu-Natal. With Buthelezi’s ties to the IFP and the government of unity, it might strengthen links between traditional leadership and provincial affairs. However, past tensions highlight the delicate balance between royal duties and political roles. Observers note that such moves often aim to foster unity and wisdom in serving the Zulu nation.
