Zondo report recommends new anti-corruption agency

By Phenyo Selinda

In a heartfelt tribute, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Thembi Simelane, honoured Chief Justice Raymond Zondo as a “beacon of wisdom,” during his farewell dinner held at Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.

Chief Justice Zondo, who is set to retire at the end of August 2024 after a distinguished 27-year judicial career, was praised by Simelane for his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law. Speaking on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, Simelane lauded Zondo’s role in transforming the judiciary and his pivotal leadership during some of the country’s most challenging times.

“Tonight, we honour a person who possesses all the virtues demanded of a judge as foretold by the ancients. A man of wisdom, tempered by experience. A man of unwavering principle and integrity. A man of humility and courage,” Simelane remarked, underscoring Zondo’s exceptional qualities that have earned him national respect.

Zondo’s Legacy and the State Capture Commission

Chief Justice Zondo’s career is particularly notable for his role in leading the State Capture Commission, officially known as the Zondo Commission, which was tasked with investigating allegations of corruption and state capture in South Africa. His work in this capacity, Simelane highlighted, was conducted with “dignity, fairness, and integrity,” making a significant contribution to the nation’s efforts to uphold justice and accountability.

“The work of what is now known as the Zondo Commission remains integral to our efforts to rebuild our country in the wake of one of the most shameful periods in our democratic history,” Simelane stated. She further emphasized that the Commission’s findings were not just revelations of misconduct but a reaffirmation of South Africa’s constitutional order and the strength of its institutions.

The Commission, which meticulously detailed the extent and nature of state capture, has been instrumental in restoring public confidence in the country’s ability to correct systemic failures and hold those responsible for corruption accountable. Simelane asserted that Zondo’s leadership in this regard will be remembered as a standard for probity in public affairs, serving the nation for many years to come.
