Zizi Kodwa Condemns DA For Burning SA Flag in Recent Political Ad

Zizi Kodwa

Zizi Kodwa, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, has sharply criticised the Democratic Alliance (DA) for its recent political advertisement, which distressingly features the burning of the South African flag. Kodwa’s condemnation came through a clear message that the emblem of the nation should never be wielded to stir discord amongst its people.

Expressing his disapproval, the Minister articulated his standpoint, “The South African flag will not be used as an instrument to sow division and hysteria.” He further elaborated on the symbolic significance of the flag, stating, “In the 30 years of South African democracy and freedom, it has been evident time and time again that our flag is a unifier and an integral component in the building of our nation. Those who choose to use our flag to divide us will not succeed.”

Kodwa underpinned the flag’s role as a beacon of hope, unity, and the diverse aspirations of South Africans. He sought to remind citizens and political entities alike of the flag’s profound symbolism, stating, “The South African flag represents our nationhood. It represents the coming together of our people.”

Taking a strong stance against the Democratic Alliance’s controversial choice to depict the flag burning in its advertisement, Kodwa criticized the action as an affront to the country’s hard-won freedom and non-racial democracy. “This action by the Democratic Alliance offends the gains South Africa has made as a free and non-racial democracy, and the blood, tears and sacrifices it took for the country to gain this freedom,” he said.

Kodwa didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment, indicating that such actions betray the legacy of past leaders who fought for South Africa’s democracy. “I shudder to think what other South African compatriots such as Helen Suzman, Zack de Beer, and Van Zyl Slabbert would say about this act of desperation and recklessness demonstrated by the current ahistorical and unpatriotic leaders of the DA,” Kodwa pointed out.

This controversial political advertisement by the DA, showing the South African flag in flames, was launched with the intention of serving as an allegory for the potential downfall of the country should certain political coalitions take power.

Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has emphasised the importance of voting in the upcoming National and Provincial Elections, advocating for active participation to elect leaders who truly represent the community’s aspirations.
