In a rain-affected series, Zimbabwe emerged victorious over Ireland with a 1-0 win in the three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series held in Harare. The final match, scheduled for Tuesday, was abandoned due to persistent rain, solidifying Zimbabwe’s series triumph.
Series Overview
• First T20I: The opening match on Saturday was washed out without a ball being bowled, as heavy rains rendered the pitch unplayable.
• Second T20I: Zimbabwe secured a three-wicket win on Sunday, with Tony Munyonga’s unbeaten 43 runs playing a pivotal role in chasing down Ireland’s target.
• Third T20I: Despite a delayed start due to pre-match showers, Zimbabwe managed to post a total of 142/6 in 18 overs. However, subsequent rain prevented Ireland from commencing their innings, leading to the match being abandoned.
Key Performances
In the final match, Captain Sikandar Raza led Zimbabwe with a top score of 34 runs, including two sixes and two fours. Contributions from Tony Munyonga and Tashinga Musekiwa, each adding 26 runs, bolstered the team’s total. On the bowling front, Ireland’s spinner Gareth Delany impressed with figures of 2/5, while fast-medium pacer Craig Young took 2/38.
Captains’ Remarks
Reflecting on the rain-impacted finale, Ireland’s captain Paul Stirling commented, “I think it would have been a good game. Zimbabwe crept to an above-par score, and it would have been a really good chase.”
Tour Summary
The series concluded Zimbabwe’s home summer on a positive note, adding to their earlier success in the One Day International (ODI) series, which they won 2-1. Ireland commenced the tour with a victory in the solitary Test match in Bulawayo, defeating Zimbabwe by 63 runs.
