Zimbabwe Celebrates 37th National Unity Day

Harare, Zimbabwe — December 22, 2024: Zimbabwe today marked 37 years since the signing of the historic Unity Accord with National Unity Day celebrations across the country. The day, steeped in national pride, saw government officials, businesses, and citizens uniting under the theme of diversity as a strength for building a prosperous future.
A Historic Milestone in Zimbabwe’s Journey
National Unity Day commemorates the landmark Unity Accord signed on December 22, 1987, between ZANU and PF-ZAPU, effectively ending years of political tension and conflict. This agreement has since been a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s peace and stability.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, speaking at the main event in Harare, emphasised the enduring importance of national unity as a driver for social cohesion, economic development, and sustainable progress.
“Unity is the lifeblood of our nation. Without it, we cannot achieve the peace and prosperity our citizens deserve,” said Mnangagwa. He further committed his government to fostering cohesion as a means to tackle pressing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and economic recovery.
Celebrations Across the Nation
Festivities unfolded nationwide, with cultural performances, parades, and public speeches highlighting Zimbabwe’s rich heritage. Government ministries collaborated with local businesses to sponsor events that brought communities together.
In Harare, the Zimbabwe Youth Council hosted a youth forum focused on the role of young people in sustaining unity and driving innovation. Similarly, in Bulawayo, citizens gathered for a series of panel discussions on leveraging diversity for economic growth.
Businesses also played an active role, with various sectors using the day to highlight their contributions to national development. The Zimbabwe Chamber of Commerce lauded the unity theme, stating, “A cohesive nation is the foundation of a thriving economy.”
Unity as a Tool for Economic Growth
President Mnangagwa linked national unity to economic resilience, highlighting ongoing government efforts to create inclusive economic opportunities.
“As we celebrate this day, let us remember that our collective strength is what will transform our economy. We must support initiatives that empower all Zimbabweans, regardless of background or region,” he said.
He cited progress in the agriculture and mining sectors, renewed foreign investments, and the government’s continued engagement with international partners as proof of the power of a united nation.
Online and Political Discussions
Social media platforms were abuzz with citizens sharing reflections on the significance of unity in addressing Zimbabwe’s current challenges. Hashtags such as #UnityDayZW and #UnitedZimbabwe trended throughout the day, with citizens calling for continued solidarity.
Prominent political leaders and organisations also echoed the importance of unity:
• Nelson Chamisa, Leader of the CCC: “Unity Day reminds us of the power of reconciliation and dialogue. As we face the challenges of today, let us honour the spirit of the Unity Accord by prioritising the needs of the people.”
• ZANU-PF Women’s League: “National Unity Day celebrates the strength of women in building communities and fostering peace. We remain committed to the vision of a united Zimbabwe.”
Meanwhile, civil society groups like Zimbabwe Peace Trust highlighted the need for inclusivity in decision-making processes, urging the government to prioritise marginalised communities in development initiatives.
Challenges and Aspirations
While the celebrations brought a sense of pride and optimism, there was also reflection on the work that lies ahead. The nation continues to grapple with economic hardships, with inflation and unemployment remaining critical concerns.
“Unity should not just be a slogan. It must translate into tangible actions that improve the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans,” said activist Thandeka Ncube in Bulawayo.
President Mnangagwa acknowledged these challenges in his address, calling for a collective approach to finding solutions. “Together, we must tackle these obstacles head-on and ensure that no Zimbabwean is left behind,” he said.

As Zimbabwe celebrates its 37th National Unity Day, the message is clear: unity is not just a historical achievement but an ongoing necessity. President Mnangagwa urged citizens to embrace unity in diversity and work together toward a common vision of peace and prosperity.
“Let us be a beacon of hope for future generations. Together, we can achieve anything,” Mnangagwa concluded.
