Dr BE Lekganyane
By Thabo Mosia
On Sunday, 1 December 2024, during the Motsepe Foundation National Day of Prayer at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, His Grace Dr Barnabas Edward Lekganyane, leader of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), urged policymakers to expedite land reform discussions, emphasising the issue’s urgency for the nation.
Addressing a congregation of over 100,000 attendees from more than 30 churches and faith-based organisations, Dr Lekganyane stated, “I would like to make a call to all policymakers to accelerate the land reform discussions; this is an urgent matter for our nation.”
The National Day of Prayer, organised by the Motsepe Foundation, has become an annual event aimed at uniting South Africans in prayer for various national issues, including poverty, corruption, and social injustices. The 2024 gathering continued this tradition, focusing on themes of unity, peace, and socio-economic development.
Land reform has been a contentious and pivotal issue in South Africa’s socio-political landscape, with debates centred around equitable land distribution and redressing historical injustices. Dr Lekganyane’s appeal underscores the critical need for accelerated action to address these longstanding disparities.
Bishop of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), has also called upon the nation to stand together in prayer, imploring an end to crime, corruption, and notably violent crimes, as well as crimes committed against and the abuse of women and children
The Motsepe Foundation National Day of Prayer serves as a platform for religious leaders to engage with pressing national concerns. In previous years, Dr Lekganyane has addressed issues such as gender-based violence and political accountability. His consistent engagement highlights the influential role of religious leadership in South Africa’s socio-political discourse.
The 2024 event also featured performances by prominent gospel artists and messages from various religious leaders, all converging on the theme of national healing and progress. The collective prayers and discussions aimed to foster a sense of unity and shared responsibility among South Africans.
As the nation continues to grapple with challenges related to land reform, Dr Lekganyane’s call to action serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of timely and effective policy interventions to promote social justice and national cohesion.
