Edgar Legoale, Chairperson of Edgar Legoale Foundation

The Edgar Legoale Foundation has released a heartfelt statement of encouragement to the matric class of 2024 as they commence their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Today marks the start of a significant milestone for thousands of learners across South Africa, with exams scheduled to run until late November. The Foundation, known for its commitment to educational development, is urging learners to stay focused, maintain integrity, and give their best as they face one of the most pivotal moments in their academic journeys.

Edgar Legoale’s Message to the Matrics

In a direct message, Edgar Legoale, Chairman of the Foundation, expressed unwavering belief in the capabilities of the learners. “Your future is in your hands,” Legoale remarked, highlighting the importance of perseverance and hard work. He emphasized that this period is not only a test of knowledge but also of character. He urged students to approach the exams with confidence, integrity, and determination, noting that these values are critical for future success.

Legoale also praised educators for their year-long dedication and support in preparing learners for this momentous occasion. The Foundation looks forward to celebrating the achievements of the matric class of 2024 and hopes to replicate the success of previous years, particularly referencing the Foundation’s gala event earlier this year, where top-performing schools and learners were honoured.

Importance of Integrity During Exams

The Foundation stressed the importance of maintaining academic integrity. As exam pressure mounts, the temptation to cheat may arise, but Legoale reiterated the serious consequences of dishonesty. The Department of Basic Education and Umalusi, South Africa’s quality assurance body, have put stringent measures in place to prevent any form of malpractice during the exams. Cheating, according to Umalusi’s CEO Dr. Mafu Rakometsi, is not only a breach of trust but a compromise of the nation’s educational standards. Any form of academic dishonesty could lead to severe penalties, including disqualification from the exams  .

NSFAS Applications and Future Opportunities

In a bid to support learners beyond matric, the Edgar Legoale Foundation also provided guidance on applying for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for 2025. This crucial financial aid program supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing higher education. The Foundation has offered to assist learners in navigating the NSFAS application process, ensuring that deserving students have access to opportunities that will shape their futures.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Good Luck Message

President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his best wishes to the class of 2024, highlighting the significance of education in shaping South Africa’s future. Ramaphosa urged learners to focus on their studies, reassuring them that their hard work will contribute to the country’s progress. “Education remains the cornerstone of our nation’s development,” Ramaphosa said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving educational outcomes and supporting learners throughout their academic journeys.

Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, also expressed her confidence in the system’s readiness for the exams, thanking educators for their dedication and calling on communities to ensure that learners are not disrupted by any external challenges, such as protests  .

Umalusi and the Department of Basic Education: Ready for the Exams

Umalusi, alongside the Department of Basic Education, has ensured that the matric exams will run smoothly across more than 9,200 centres nationwide. Stringent security measures have been put in place to safeguard the integrity of the examinations. From the secure printing and distribution of exam papers to the appointment of over 55,000 markers, every step has been meticulously planned to prevent any irregularities  .

The final matric results will be released in January 2025, with the Department of Basic Education announcing the results on 15 January. This will be a moment of great anticipation, as the nation awaits to see how the class of 2024 performed amid the numerous challenges faced during their academic year .

Support from the Edgar Legoale Foundation

As the class of 2024 embarks on this challenging journey, the Edgar Legoale Foundation has reiterated its commitment to supporting learners, not only during the exam period but also as they transition into the next phase of their educational careers. The Foundation’s efforts in the Free State, particularly in Parys, have been instrumental in creating opportunities for learners and providing much-needed resources to schools in the area.

“Stay focused, stay determined, and remember that your future is in your hands,” Legoale concluded. The Foundation, educators, and the entire nation stand behind the matric class of 2024, wishing them the best of luck in their final exams and beyond.
