BRICS Youth Council
Johannesburg – The recent 15th BRICS Summit, currently taking place in Johannesburg, has seen young people from member states advocating for the establishment of a BRICS Youth Council.
Asanda Luwaca, Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), addressed the summit on Wednesday and highlighted the consensus reached at the 9th BRICS Youth Summit regarding the formation of a Youth Council.

Luwaca emphasized the importance of deeper collaborations among young people and urged the summit to endorse the proposal for the establishment of the BRICS Youth Council in its final declaration.
The objective of this council would be to create new pathways for positive change and innovation, ensuring that no young person within the BRICS member states is left behind. Luwaca stressed that the voices and views of the youth are crucial in shaping post-pandemic societies.
Under the theme “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism,” the summit has gathered leaders from Brazil, India, China, and South Africa.
With young people constituting a significant portion of the population in each BRICS country, their collective strengths should be leveraged to prioritize areas such as trade, education, skills development and training, economic participation and transformation, health and well-being, and social cohesion.
During the 9th BRICS Youth Summit, a draft framework for the establishment of the BRICS Youth Council was presented. This council would act as the coordination body for youth development among BRICS member countries and would join other formations such as the BRICS Business Council, BRICS Women’s Alliance, and the new Development Bank.
The NYDA hosted the 9th Youth Summit and the Meeting of Ministers responsible for Youth Affairs last month under the theme of “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism.”
The BRICS Youth Summit serves as a platform for dialogue among delegates from member states, focusing on the promotion of peace, security, and development in a complex globalizing world.
Its objectives include facilitating the sharing of ideas and the creation of a concrete Action Plan for cooperation in economic, humanitarian, mass media, and scientific spheres.
South Africa, as the head of BRICS this year, directed the summit’s discussions towards encouraging young leaders to actively participate in addressing global challenges and contributing to the developmental agenda.
The summit also highlights the need for constructive engagement on youth empowerment and the advancement of youth development.
It aims to create a conducive environment where young people can devise a path towards a brighter and better future.
The outcomes and resolutions of the BRICS Youth Summit will be presented to the Ministers’ Meeting for decision-making and adoption.
