Mbongeni Mbonambi
World Rugby has announced that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with charges against South African rugby player Mbongeni Mbonambi. The accusation of using discriminatory language was made by England’s Tom Curry during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final last Saturday. Another allegation regarding a previous match in the Autumn Nations Series 2022 was also brought forward.
World Rugby mentioned in its statement that any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously and warrants a thorough investigation. After considering all the available evidence, including match footage, audio, and statements from both teams, World Rugby determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges. However, the governing body also emphasized that the matter can be revisited if additional evidence comes to light.
World Rugby acknowledged that Curry made the allegations in good faith and stated that there is no suggestion that the accusation was deliberately false or malicious. The body expressed its concern over the social media abuse that both players have faced since the allegations were made. World Rugby strongly condemned discrimination, abuse, and hate speech, and urged fans to uphold the sport’s values of respect, integrity, and solidarity.
The news of Mbonambi being cleared of charges comes just before the highly anticipated 2023 Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand, known as the All Blacks. The final will take place at Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, and the match will be broadcast live on SuperSport and SABC.
Excitement is mounting in the country as supporters eagerly await the historic World Cup final. Public viewing areas and fan parks have been set up for fans to gather and enjoy the game. The City of Cape Town has identified three public viewing sites in the CBD, Langa, and Mitchells Plain, while the Free State province will have a fan park at the SaamTrek Fan Park – Phakisa Raceway.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed his excitement and encouraged residents to come together to watch the game, hoping that the Springboks will make history by winning their fourth title. Thabo Meeko, Free State MEC for Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, also called on citizens to support the national rugby team at the fan park. The park will offer various activities and entertainment, including a kiddie’s village, biker stunts show, car drifting, music performances, food stalls, and tourism products exhibitions.
