Westville School Teacher
By Nkosana Khumalo
Westville, April 22, 2025 – Sydenham police are investigating a disturbing case of child grooming at a Westville school after a male teacher allegedly sent explicit messages to a 12-year-old pupil. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting outrage from parents and raising serious concerns about child safety in schools.
How the Incident Came to Light
The situation was uncovered when the girl’s mother noticed a sudden change in her daughter’s behaviour. Sensing something was wrong, she investigated further and discovered inappropriate TikTok chats between her 12-year-old daughter and the male teacher. Chairperson of the School Governing Body, Veran Jankee, praised the mother’s vigilance, stating, “Fortunately, the parent was on top of it. She started digging further and established that there were TikTok chats. When she found that out, she notified the school, and then we took it through the process.”
The school was promptly informed, triggering an internal investigation and the involvement of Sydenham police. The discovery has left the community reeling, with many questioning how such misconduct could occur under the watch of trusted educators.
Parents’ Fury Sparks Protests
On Tuesday morning, furious parents gathered outside the school’s locked gates, demanding answers and immediate action. The protest reflected the deep sense of betrayal felt by families who entrust their children to the school. One parent, whose child recently started attending the school, expressed her frustration and fear: “I was going ballistic. You are sending them to school trusting teachers, and this is what you hear. It is really crazy, and I think the school had two weeks to solve the situation. No correspondence.” She added that she is now considering withdrawing her child from the school due to safety concerns.
The lack of timely communication from the school has only fuelled parents’ anger, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in handling the allegations.
Teacher’s Admission and Troubling History
KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi provided a shocking update, revealing that the teacher admitted to the misconduct during a preliminary investigation. Even more concerning, further inquiries uncovered previous allegations against the teacher from another school where he had worked. “The educator himself has admitted to having done that, and upon deeper investigation, we found that he also did the same at another school where he was,” Mahlambi confirmed.
This revelation has intensified scrutiny on the teacher’s employment history and raised questions about the effectiveness of background checks and oversight within the education system.
School’s Response and Ongoing Investigations
In a message sent to parents via the D6 communicator app on Tuesday morning, the school confirmed that the teacher has been removed from his position pending the outcome of multiple investigations. The 12-year-old pupil is receiving counselling to help her cope with the trauma of the incident.
While the school’s decision to remove the teacher has been welcomed, many parents feel the response was too slow and lacked sufficient detail. Both the school and Sydenham police continue to investigate, with the community awaiting further updates on the case.
