Several schools across the Cape Winelands, Overberg Education Districts, and the Helderberg basin area in the Western Cape will remain closed on Monday. This decision comes in response to severe storm warnings, including a Level 9 alert for damaging winds and rain across the province, as issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

In light of the warnings, the Western Cape Education Department has prioritized the safety of learners and staff by shutting down educational institutions in the affected areas for the day. The department’s spokesperson, Kerry Mauchline, articulated the gravity of the situation. “We have not taken the decision to close these schools lightly: we have done so out of an abundance of caution to protect our learners and school staff. It is always better to be safe than sorry,” Mauchline stated, underscoring the seriousness with which the department is treating the SAWS warning.

Mauchline, speaking on behalf of Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier, elaborated on the department’s proactive measures ahead of the storm. “So far, we have already received reports from a number of schools that have been damaged by high winds, and our infrastructure team is currently assessing the damage. The closure will be in effect only for Monday, 8 April 2024, at this stage,” she clarified, ensuring parents that affected schools would communicate directly regarding the closures.

Moreover, Mauchline revealed that the department is open to closing more schools on an ad hoc basis should further damage necessitate such measures. She reassured that the department would closely monitor the situation and reevaluate the weather conditions on Monday to determine if closures need to extend into Tuesday.
