Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness
By Mpho Moloi
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has initiated an investigation into a distressing incident at Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville, Cape Town, where a security guard was filmed dragging a patient across the floor. The video, which has circulated widely on social media, has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about patient treatment within healthcare facilities.
Incident Details
In the video, a male patient is seen lying on the hospital floor, clutching what appears to be medication. A female security guard, employed by Phangela Security Group, is observed instructing the patient to stand. When he does not comply, she grabs his arm and drags him along the floor, in full view of other patients and visitors. Background conversations suggest the patient had arrived at the hospital “dripping blood.”
Official Responses
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has labeled the incident as “regrettable” and is conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances leading to this event. The department emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all patients are treated with dignity and respect.
Phangela Security Group, the service provider responsible for hospital security, has also launched an internal investigation. The company expressed deep concern over the incident and reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the dignity and respect of all hospital patients.
Public Reaction
The video has elicited strong reactions from the public, with many condemning the actions of the security guard and calling for improved training and protocols to handle such situations. Advocates for patient rights have stressed the importance of compassionate care and the need for healthcare facilities to ensure that security personnel are adequately trained to manage challenging scenarios without resorting to force.
Previous Incidents at Karl Bremer Hospital
This event is not isolated, as Karl Bremer Hospital has faced scrutiny over patient safety in the past. In September 2022, a patient was fatally attacked by another patient within the hospital premises, raising concerns about security measures in place to protect patients.
Next Steps
The Department of Health and Wellness has committed to a comprehensive review of the incident and plans to implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. This includes reassessing security protocols, enhancing staff training, and ensuring that all personnel understand the importance of treating patients with compassion and respect.
