Western Cape Government Urges Motorists to Reduce Speed Amid Rising Traffic offences

CAPE TOWN — The Western Cape Government (WCG) is calling on motorists to reduce their speed on the province’s roads after a troubling 201 speeding offences were recorded between 5 and 11 August 2024. This alarming statistic underscores the ongoing challenge of promoting road safety and curbing reckless driving across the Western Cape.

“This statistic highlights the ongoing challenge of curbing speeding and ensuring road safety across the province,” the WCG stated, emphasising the critical need for greater adherence to speed limits.

According to the provincial government, speeding remains one of the leading causes of traffic crashes, often resulting in preventable injuries and fatalities. The Mobility Department has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safer driving habits and urged all road users to follow speed regulations to protect themselves and others on the road.

The recent enforcement efforts led to the arrest of one motorist for speeding and six others for reckless and negligent driving. The most severe speed violations recorded during this period included a shocking 161km/h in a 120km/h zone, 144km/h in a 100km/h zone, and 89km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Speeding is not just a violation of traffic laws; it is a significant threat to public safety. The department stressed that driving at excessive speeds drastically reduces a driver’s reaction time, increases the severity of collisions, and diminishes the effectiveness of a vehicle’s safety features.

“In the unfortunate event of an accident, the chances of severe injuries or fatalities rise dramatically with speed. Pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users are especially at risk when drivers exceed speed limits,” the department warned.

To combat the ongoing issue, the Mobility Department has intensified its traffic law enforcement, including increasing patrols on high-risk routes. Western Cape MEC of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, emphasised that enforcement alone is insufficient to address the problem.

“We need a collective effort from all road users to change their mindset and driving behaviour. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and adhering to speed limits is a crucial aspect of this responsibility,” said Sileku.

He reiterated the department’s dedication to creating safer roads for all Western Cape residents, urging drivers to recognise the dangers of speeding and contribute to community safety by adhering to prescribed speed limits.

“We urge drivers to take the dangers of speeding seriously and to contribute to the safety of our communities by driving within the prescribed speed limits. Together, we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and make our roads safer for all Western Cape residents,” Sileku added.

Tips for Drivers to Avoid Speeding:

1. Plan Ahead: Ensure you leave with enough time to reach your destination without feeling rushed.
2. Stay Alert: Regularly check your speedometer and adjust your speed according to road conditions and speed limits.
3. Use Cruise Control: On freeways, cruise control can help maintain a steady and legal speed.
4. Be Mindful of Speed Zones: Pay attention to road signs indicating speed limits and adjust your speed accordingly, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity.
5. Avoid Aggressive Driving: Keep calm and patient, even in traffic or when running late.
