Cold Front with Yellow Level 4 Warning

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds along the Western Cape coastline, effective Saturday, 10 May 2025. This warning pertains to strong north-westerly winds expected to reach speeds of 50–70 km/h, with gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h. These conditions pose risks such as uprooted trees, damaged infrastructure, and hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles.

Forecaster Luthando Masimini noted that these conditions will impact the navigation of small boats on water. He added that the cold front is expected to move fast across the eastern parts of the country by Sunday.

“We are also expecting those conditions to spread to the Eastern Cape coast…between Plettenberg Bay and East London. Also, some strong damaging winds which are also associated with damaging waves are expected in that area where we are also issuing a slightly lower level of a yellow warning,” Masimini stated.

Impact on Coastal and Inland Areas

The Yellow Level 4 warning indicates a high likelihood of significant impacts, including:
• Disruption to coastal activities: Strong winds and high waves may make marine operations hazardous.
• Damage to infrastructure: Potential for uprooted trees, damaged roofs, and power outages.
• Hazardous driving conditions: Especially for high-sided vehicles on open roads.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with the latest weather information.

Safety Precautions

• Secure loose items: Residents should fasten or store away outdoor furniture, bins, and other objects that could become airborne.
• Exercise caution when traveling: Motorists are advised to be vigilant for debris on roads and to drive cautiously in strong wind conditions.
• Avoid coastal activities: Due to rough seas and high waves, activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing are discouraged during this period.
• Stay informed: Regularly check updates from SAWS and local authorities for the latest weather information and advisories.

For emergencies or to report weather-related incidents, contact the City of Cape Town’s Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of adverse weather conditions.
