By Thys Khiba – Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in west rand have arrested 23 undocumented foreign nationals who are suspected to be illegal miners in Gauteng following a shootout.
“On Tuesday, 15 November 2022, police and security guards from a local mine reacted to shootout incident at a dumping site, whereby three men were found injured, with gunshot wounds,” Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel MavelaMasondo.

West Rand police arrests 23 suspected Zama Zamas
Investigations linked this shootout incident to a rivalry fight between the Zama Zamas in the area.
“Further investigation resulted in the arrests of 23 undocumented foreign nationals near the scene of crime.”
Police have found a firearm in and charged one of the suspects with attempted murder and unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The arrested are expected to appear before Westonaria Magistrates’ Court in due course.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) AdvocateShamila Batohi said the country is losing a fight against organised crimes.
