Cape Town – Karabo Morapedi, a 22-year-old athlete from Welkom in the Free State, is set to represent South Africa at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. His journey to this prestigious event is a testament to the power of family support and determination in overcoming disabilities.
Morapedi was born with cerebral palsy quadriplegia, a condition affecting all four limbs and presenting both physical and intellectual challenges. However, this has not deterred him from pursuing his dreams. Supported by his mother Sebolelo Morapedi and his aunt Selloane Bochedi, Karabo has thrived both academically and in sports.
Karabo’s journey began at Tswellang Special School in Bloemfontein, where he first discovered his passion for Boccia, a precision ball sport that tests muscle control and accuracy. He continued to develop his skills at Martie du Plessis School, a dedicated institution for learners with physical and learning disabilities, where he completed his matric. His talent and perseverance saw him excel in Boccia, a sport that requires players to throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel a ball towards a target.
After school, Karabo enrolled at the Central University of Technology (CUT) Welkom Campus, where he graduated with a National Diploma in Public Management. He is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Applied Public Management at the same institution. Throughout his academic and sporting journey, the unwavering support from his family and coach has been crucial to his success.
In July 2023, Karabo, alongside his teammate Elanza Jordaan, made history by qualifying for the Paralympics during the World Boccia Africa Regional Championships in Cairo, Egypt. This marked the first time South Africa had qualified for Boccia at the Paralympic Games .
Reflecting on his journey, Karabo’s aunt, Selloane Bochedi, emphasized the importance of investing in the education and development of children with special needs. “We have always been actively involved in his educational journey. He has always performed well in school and excelled in his tertiary education studies,” she explained. Karabo’s story is a powerful reminder that living with a disability does not mean being confined to the home; with love and support, individuals can achieve remarkable feats.
Karabo’s participation in the Paralympic Games is not just a personal triumph but also a source of immense pride for his family and community. His achievements highlight the significant role that family support and accessible educational institutions play in the lives of children with disabilities.
As the Paralympic Games approach, Karabo remains focused and determined to make his mark on the global stage. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, running from 28 August to 8 September, will see Karabo compete alongside the world’s best athletes, showcasing his skills and resilience.
