African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula is currently addressing the media, announcing significant steps aimed at reducing the impact of money in leadership elections within the ANC. Mbalula stated that the ANC’s Electoral Committee, led by former president Kgalema Motlanthe, has been tasked with investigating financial influences in leadership contests.
In a decisive move, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to establish a Standing Committee dedicated to probing leaks of NEC and National Working Committee (NWC) information. This committee will conduct forensic audits of any leaked information by NEC and NWC members, targeting instances where internal ANC decisions have been prematurely disclosed to journalists or third parties.
Additionally, Mbalula highlighted that no ANC member would be allowed to engage in lobbying, leadership contestation, or self-promotion before the 2027 national conference, except within a designated period to be announced. Any unauthorised engagement in such activities will lead to disciplinary action, as the NEC emphasised its commitment to focusing on implementing conference resolutions and the ANC’s electoral manifesto.
The Secretary-General stressed the importance of preventing premature leadership discussions, which could detract from addressing critical organisational priorities. This announcement reflects the ANC’s renewed commitment to maintaining unity and ensuring that leadership elections are free from undue financial influence.
