The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Provincial Deputy Coordinator in Free State, Nthabiseng Dyoyihas responded to the controversial media statement issued by the Sanco Regional Task Team in Mangaung by challenging them to read the constitution of the civic organisation.
This comes after the RTT in Mangaung announced on Saturday, 21 October, that they are no longer recognising Dyoyi as their Deputy Provincial Coordinator due to her political affiliation with a political party that was recently founded by the former ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule, known as the African Congress for Transformation (ACT).
Dyoyi is officially a member of the ACT and Sanco from Lucas Bogope branch in Ward 8, in Kroonstad.
“Sanco Constitution chapter 5 under Membership states that membership shall be open to all citizens and or residents of the Republic of South Africa, irrespective of race, colour, gender, political affiliation, class and geographical location over the age of 18 years.
“I am challenging the spokesperson of Mangaung to quote where it is saying I have acted against the constitution of SANCO from the constitution of SANCO,” said Dyoyi.
In addition to her response, Dyoyi indicated she is appointed by ‘the constitutional meeting’ to be a provincial leader of the civic organisation.
“The task I have been given together with the committee of SANCO FS is to take SANCO to Provincial Conference.”
On the question of unity, Dyoyi claimed Sanco under the leadership of the Provincial Convener Godfrey Mayekiso and Provincial Coordinator Gift Poli is united.
“This year on the 13th of May, three Sanco structures that were existing merged and the meeting was arranged by COSATU FS and SACP FS to facilitate the unity of Sanco. I therefore confirm that Sanco in the Free State is united under the leadership of cdeGodfrey Mayekiso as the Provincial Convener and cde Gift Polias the Provincial Coordinator,” Dyoyi said.
In the statement released by Mangaung RTT, Sanco accused Dyoyi of being associated with what they call ‘anti-revolutionaries whom everything to them is about power and positions.’
Sanco regional spokesperson Thamsanqa Milela said the civic organisation is distancing itself from anyone who is a member of any political party that is anti-African National Congress (ANC).
“SANCO in Mangaung would like to distance itself from anyone who is a member of any political organization that is anti-ANC, we have for the longest time been in alliance with the ANC led alliance together with SACP and COSATU.
“It will therefore mean we are now inconsistent in our approach if we would allow anyone to join an opposition party and still be with us, especially the Official in an upper structure,” said Milela.
Sanco has sent a warning to supporters and defenders of Dyoyi, and encouraged them to join the ACT.
While they are divided by on the subject of political affiliation, Milela said the regional and provincial unity of Sanco is important.
“… we will never achieve all the necessary steps and goals towards unity in the Free State if we still have such rouge elements within SANCO!”
To support their argument, the RTT said the tripartite discussions of unity were initiated by the parties that are known to be supporters of the ANC, namely SACP and COSATU in Free State.
“So it would be an earnest contradiction if we allow us to be having leaders who are taking such bold and progress move by our alliance partners for granted, as the main objective in uniting SANCO was to make a strong alliance towards 2024 General Elections.”
In response to our questions to the provincial structure, Poli said Dyoyi has exercised her constitutional right by joining ACT.
“We still have to engage Mangaung regional committee in relation to their media statement. Remember we are not a federal organisation, we are a unitary organisation.
“We have said to them [Mangaung RTT], they must not go to the media. We must ventilate this issue to the provincial structure, so that we can discuss it,” said Poli.
Poli confirmed that Dyoyi is still recognised as the DeputyProvincial Coordinator by the provincial structure of Sanco. The civic organisation has instructed the Mangaung regional committee to write a letter in relation to their unsatisfactory of Dyoyi joining another political party.
Sanco in the Free State province is expected to formally discuss the decision of Dyoyi.
Meanwhile, the ANC in the Lejweleputswa Region expelled its members for joining the ACT.
Regional Chairperson, Xolile Toki, confirmed among the expelled members of the ruling party are former mayors, members of mayoral committees, speakers, deputy regional chairpersons, and the former regional secretary.
“As the Regional Executive Committee, we have noticed there are members who defected to other political parties. We have engaged with our structures formally to identify people who have not resigned from the ANC and chose to defect.”
Toki said an ANC ward councillor of the Nala Local Municipality, Sootho Tau was expelled and found guilty on seven of eight counts of misconduct after numerous attempts to reprimand and correct his behaviour towards the ANC.
