Walter Sisulu University

A staff member at Walter Sisulu University’s (WSU) Mthatha campus was tragically gunned down in their vehicle on Thursday afternoon, sparking renewed concerns over campus safety. The incident occurred at approximately 17:39 near the Nkululekweni entrance gate, adjacent to the N2 highway. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that the victim was found inside a stationary vehicle in the driver’s seat, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The motive for the murder remains unknown, and forensic experts and detectives are actively processing the secured crime scene.

Details of the Shooting

The victim, a senior staff member at WSU whose identity has not been disclosed pending family notification, was attacked in a hail of gunfire near the busy Nkululekweni entrance gate. Brigadier Gantana described the scene: “Police discovered the deceased inside a stationary vehicle in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds.” The vehicle, marked by bullet holes, was towed away for forensic examination after detectives secured the area.
The timing of the attack—just before dusk—has left the university community shaken. Eyewitnesses reportedly heard rapid gunfire, though no official statements from bystanders have been released. The proximity to the N2 highway, a major route cutting through the Eastern Cape, has raised questions about whether the assailants fled via this arterial road. Police have not confirmed the number of suspects involved, but the brutality of the attack suggests it may have been premeditated.

A Campus Plagued by Violence

This murder comes just months after WSU’s Mthatha campus was thrust into the spotlight in April 2025. A violent student protest erupted over housing issues, culminating in tragedy when the campus residence manager allegedly opened fire on demonstrators. One student was killed, and another was injured in the chaos. The 54-year-old suspect surrendered to police two days later and was controversially granted bail, a decision that triggered further unrest on campus.
The April incident exposed deep-seated tensions at WSU, with students accusing the administration of neglecting their safety and well-being. The campus, situated in a region grappling with high crime rates and socio-economic challenges, has struggled to maintain a secure environment. Thursday’s killing has reignited these concerns, with many pointing to a pattern of violence that demands urgent attention.

EFF Youth Leader Speaks Out

The murder has drawn sharp criticism from political figures, including EFF Youth Leader Sihle Lonzi, who linked the incident to broader safety failures. “We are deeply troubled by the news of the killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor in Walter Sisulu University,” Lonzi said. “Worse, it is said the shooting happened near campus. The same Mthatha Campus where a student was shot and killed. Something needs to be done about safety on our campuses.” While initial reports suggest the victim may have been a Deputy Vice Chancellor, police have not yet confirmed the individual’s exact position at WSU.
Lonzi’s comments echo a growing chorus of voices calling for improved security at South African universities. The WSU Mthatha campus, surrounded by urban and rural communities alike, faces unique vulnerabilities due to its location. The Nkululekweni gate, a key access point, has long been flagged as a security weak spot, with limited surveillance and easy access to the highway.

Police Investigation in Full Swing

Police have launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the motive and identify those responsible. Brigadier Gantana assured the public that forensic experts are working tirelessly at the crime scene, collecting ballistic evidence and analysing the vehicle for clues. “The motive for the murder remains unknown,” she said, adding that detectives are exploring all possibilities, from personal disputes to potential connections with local crime networks.
Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby cameras, though it’s unclear if the Nkululekweni gate itself is equipped with adequate surveillance. Gantana appealed to the public for assistance: “Anyone with information should contact the police. We need the community’s help to solve this case.” No suspects have been apprehended, but the investigation is being treated as a priority given the high-profile nature of the victim and the location.
