Professor Stephen Khehla Ndlovu, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Principal, officially began his term at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on 1st February 2024. The University warmly welcomed the charismatic leader who is anticipated to invigorate and guide the academic institution over the next five years with strategic leadership and management. Prof. Ndlovu plans to closely align VUT with its vision, mission, and strategic plans, while also syncing with national and regional government policy initiatives.

Prof. Ndlovu’s introduction took place at a small welcoming ceremony held at the VUT Council Chambers. Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Mandla Radebe, together with his deputy, Ms. Jackie Manche, led the proceedings. University stakeholders including Council members, the Management Committee (ManCom), representatives from the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), the Student Representative Council (SRC) and others joined in person and via MS Teams.

Amid an atmosphere of palpable excitement, a succession of addresses marked the ceremonious welcome. Each speaker congratulated Prof. Ndlovu on his appointment and pledged support for his leadership. Attendees expressed a shared commitment to Prof. Ndlovu’s vision, promising to nurture the University’s academic pursuits, provide engaging learning opportunities, invigorate research, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

Interim Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr. Simphiwe Nelana, who commendably served during the transition period, assured Prof. Ndlovu of a robust management team ready to support him and the University’s drive towards success. “Everyone in management supports your appointment – signifying their ample readiness to back you,” relayed Dr. Nelana.

Also, Prof. Mandla Radebe took the opportunity to highlight the significant timing of Prof. Ndlovu’s appointment and his confidence that Prof. Ndlovu’s vision for VUT would take it to unprecedented heights. He furthermore congratulated Prof. Ndlovu for his courage in accepting the imperative position at a critically important time.

Thanking the former acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nelana, Prof. Radebe acknowledged Dr. Nelana and his management team’s unwavering dedication and leadership under challenging times.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ndlovu expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic reception and towards the Council’s faith in his leadership abilities. Prof. Ndlovu pledged his commitment to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and partnerships within the VUT community. Viewing every member as vital to the institution’s success, he emphasized his intention to adopt an inclusive approach.

Despite not revealing extensive plans, Prof. Ndlovu underscored his intention to boost the University’s rankings emphasizing the importance of understanding the ranking criteria and identifying areas of improvement. He also highlighted the need for strengthening partnerships.
