Vusi Khoza vs Jimmy Manyi
By Nkosana Khumalo
Former EFF KZN Leader Vusi Khoza has officially joined the Labour Party as its National Organizer, marking yet another chapter in his storied political journey. Khoza’s move not only repositions him within South Africa’s political sphere but has also earned him the unofficial title of South Africa’s most prominent “political tourist,” previously held by Jimmy Manyi. This comes after Khoza’s affiliations with a string of political organizations, including the UDF, ANC, NFP, EFF, Afrika Unite Congress, and the MK Party.
Jimmy Manyi, now the MK Party’s chief whip in Parliament, humorously relinquished the title, saying, “People must stop harassing me, here’s the title holder in political tourism😁,” a remark that has sparked widespread commentary on social media.
Vusi Khoza’s Political Journey
Vusi Khoza’s decision to join the Labour Party follows his dramatic expulsion from the EFF in October 2023. He made headlines after failing to organize transportation for the party’s 10th-anniversary celebrations, a role he was tasked with as the party’s Provincial Chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal. His expulsion was a significant blow, but it didn’t take long for Khoza to resurface in another political capacity.
Khoza’s political career spans decades and numerous organizations. Starting in the United Democratic Front (UDF) during the struggle against apartheid, he later transitioned to the ANC, where he played active roles in grassroots mobilization. After growing disillusioned with the ANC’s leadership, he joined the National Freedom Party (NFP), serving as a key organizer before eventually moving to the EFF. His brief stint with Afrika Unite Congress and the MK Party further solidified his reputation as a political wanderer.
Social Media Reactions
The announcement of Khoza’s Labour Party role sent shockwaves across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users debated the implications of his political shift. Many users drew comparisons between Khoza and Jimmy Manyi, with some humorously suggesting Khoza had “outdone” Manyi in political tourism.
Jimmy Manyi, known for his affiliations with the ANC, ATM, and EFF before landing his current role in the MK Party, seemed to take the comments in stride. His humorous response to the “political tourist” label won him praise for his self-awareness, with some calling him a “good sport” in the face of public scrutiny.
The Labour Party’s Reaction
The Labour Party, a smaller but growing political entity in South Africa, welcomed Khoza’s arrival as a strategic boost to its organizational structure. In a statement, Labour Party President Boitumelo Mokoena said, “Vusi Khoza brings a wealth of experience in political mobilization and grassroots engagement. His addition to the Labour Party aligns with our mission to provide a credible alternative to the dominant political parties.”
Mokoena added that Khoza’s expertise would play a pivotal role in strengthening the Labour Party’s presence, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, a province where Khoza has significant influence.
Jimmy Manyi’s Political Timeline
Jimmy Manyi’s political journey has been equally colorful, making his light-hearted comments on Khoza’s reputation all the more fitting. Manyi’s affiliations span from the ANC, where he served as Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) head, to the African Transformation Movement (ATM), the EFF, and now the MK Party. His transition between parties has often been met with both criticism and amusement from political commentators.
Currently serving as the MK Party’s chief whip in Parliament, Manyi has maintained that his political moves are driven by a desire to serve South Africans rather than personal ambition. His humorous response to the “political tourist” label has also deflected some of the criticism often leveled against him.
Historical Context: Khoza’s Expulsion from the EFF
Vusi Khoza’s departure from the EFF remains one of the most talked-about moments in his career. As the Provincial Chairperson for KwaZulu-Natal, Khoza was responsible for organizing transportation for thousands of party members to attend the EFF’s 10th-anniversary celebrations in Gauteng. His failure to deliver on this critical task led to public embarrassment for the party and ultimately his expulsion.
EFF leader Julius Malema, in a fiery press briefing, described Khoza’s actions as a “betrayal of the party’s values,” adding that the EFF could not tolerate “incompetence at leadership level.”
Despite the fallout, Khoza has maintained that his intentions were never malicious and that his departure from the EFF was politically motivated.
