Volvo South Africa
By Mpho Moloi
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced that Volvo Cars South Africa is recalling certain models due to identified safety concerns. The recall, officially notified to the NCC on 31 January 2025, affects the XC90 and XC40 MY2024 models, citing issues related to the braking system and turn indicator functionality.
Affected Volvo Models and Identified Issues
According to the NCC, the recall includes:
1. Volvo XC90 (Sold from 20 January 2023) – A potential software failure has been detected in the brake control module. In rare cases, this could result in a loss of braking support function, posing a serious safety risk.
2. Volvo XC90 (Sold from 29 October 2024) – This model is being recalled due to a manufacturing defect involving the rod between the brake pedal and brake booster. If the rod detaches, the brake pedal will fail to function properly, increasing the risk of an accident.
3. Volvo XC40 MY2024 (Sold from 24 January 2024) – An issue has been identified with the turn indicator system, which in rare cases may cause a temporary loss of the left rear turn indicator function.
NCC Urges Consumers to Respond to Recall
The NCC has urged all affected vehicle owners to immediately contact Volvo Cars South Africa to arrange necessary inspections and repairs.
NCC spokesperson Pheto Ntaba confirmed that the recall was issued as a precautionary measure to prevent potential road safety hazards.
“Volvo Car South Africa has assured the NCC that these recalls are aimed at preventing any serious incidents linked to these faults. The company is reaching out to affected customers and has committed to fixing these issues at no cost to consumers,” said Ntaba.
Acting NCC Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu, has advised all affected Volvo owners to take the recall notice seriously.
Volvo’s Commitment to Safety
Volvo has long been known for its strong commitment to automotive safety and has previously recalled vehicles globally to ensure driver and passenger protection.
A similar braking system issue was identified in Volvo models sold in Europe and North America, leading to a global recall of thousands of vehicles.
Consumer Guidance
Owners of the affected models should immediately contact their nearest Volvo dealership for a free safety inspection and repairs.
For more information, consumers can:
• Visit Volvo’s official website or
• Call the National Consumer Commission (NCC) helpline
The NCC has also warned that failure to comply with recall instructions could pose a serious safety risk to both vehicle occupants and other road users.
This recall is part of Volvo’s ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and maintain the highest vehicle manufacturing standards.
