Visa-Free Access Granted Between Ghana and South Africa

South Africa and Ghana

Ghana and South Africa have signed an agreement granting visa-free access to citizens of both countries who hold ordinary passports. This major breakthrough will undoubtedly strengthen the ties between these two African nations and foster greater socio-cultural and economic cooperation.

In a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, it was stated that the visa waiver regime will be implemented starting from November 1, 2023. This means that citizens of Ghana and South Africa can travel and stay in each other’s territories for a period of up to 90 days without the need for a visa.

This agreement signifies a significant milestone in the efforts to enhance regional integration and promote people-to-people exchanges. It is a testament to the commitment of both governments to facilitate travel and foster closer relations between their citizens.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration urged the public to take note of this important development. Travelers from Ghana can now transit through, depart from, and stay in South Africa, or vice versa, for a cumulative period not exceeding 90 days within a year. However, it is essential to note that this visa waiver does not permit engaging in any form of employment during the stay.

The South African High Commission in Ghana released a separate statement emphasizing that although the visa waiver is in effect for 90 days, passport holders will still be required to submit a visa application if they exceed the allowed duration. This measure ensures compliance with the regulations and prevents any potential abuse of the visa-free access privilege.
