Tshilidzi Maraga, the former chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo, has officially resigned from the party and joined Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Her departure follows a period of dissatisfaction within the EFF leadership, particularly after the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 national and provincial elections. Maraga, who has been with the EFF since its early days, cited frustrations over leadership dynamics and what she describes as “friendship and favoritism” as key reasons for her decision to leave the party.

The 2024 national and provincial elections marked a slight decline in support for the EFF, both nationally and in Limpopo. Nationally, the EFF’s share of the vote dropped from 10.8% in 2019 to 9.52% in 2024. In Limpopo, the EFF’s support slipped from 14.43% in 2019 to 14.12% in 2024 . While the party gained two additional seats in the provincial legislature due to an increase in population, internal conflicts within the leadership, including Maraga’s defiance of directives from the national leadership, strained her position. This eventually led to her removal as provincial chairperson .

The restructuring of the EFF in Limpopo was part of a broader response to the party’s declining influence in the province. In June, the EFF announced new leadership appointments, replacing Maraga with Commissar Lawrence Mapoulo as the provincial chairperson, along with other key leaders such as Kgothatso Mogoane (Provincial Secretary), Dunani Baloyi (Provincial Deputy Secretary), and Meisie Kennedy (Provincial Treasurer) .

Floyd Shivambu’s recent resignation from the EFF and subsequent role as the MK Party’s national organiser has been another significant factor influencing Maraga’s decision. Shivambu, a founding member of the EFF, left the party due to growing tensions with Julius Malema and is reportedly spearheading efforts to recruit disillusioned EFF members into the MK Party. Maraga’s move to the MK Party is part of a broader shift, with several other high-profile figures, such as Mzwanele Manyi and Carl Niehaus, following suit .

Shivambu’s role in the MK Party involves overseeing political education, policy development, and governance strategies. His departure from the EFF has caused significant concern within the party, with Malema acknowledging that more members may leave to join the MK Party .
