The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, has extended his congratulations to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his re-election on August 23, 2023.
In a letter dated September 8, 2023, Guterres expressed his anticipation for the continued collaboration between Zimbabwe and the UN, specifically in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2022-2026. The objectives of this cooperation include accelerating development, ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic growth, promoting gender equality, safeguarding human rights, and taking comprehensive climate action in Zimbabwe.
Guterres also took the opportunity to recognize Zimbabwe’s efforts in advancing the political participation of women and urged President Mnangagwa to promote gender parity in Cabinet and senior appointments.
Earlier this week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially began his second term in office after being declared the winner of the August election, despite allegations of electoral fraud made by the main opposition party.
The leader of the opposition, Nelson Chamisa, did not challenge the results in court but called for a new vote, citing flaws in the election process.
While Mnangagwa encouraged the opposition to seek legal action, he maintained that the election was valid and warned against any attempts to incite chaos, promising a crackdown on those involved.
