Umalusi
Umalusi, the national education quality assurance body, has given the green light for the release of the November 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. This decision was announced by Umalusi council chairperson Professor Yunus Ballim at a media briefing on Monday.
Over 890,000 full-time and part-time candidates sat for the matric exams administered by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) at the end of 2023. After reviewing all evidence, the council concluded that the exams were administered in accordance with the regulations, leading to the approval of the exam results.
Ballim did acknowledge some irregularities identified during the writing and marking stages but emphasized that they did not compromise the overall credibility and integrity of the exams. However, they have asked the DBE to investigate and verify any alleged acts of dishonesty and to address printing errors and the ongoing issue of group copying.
The ministerial announcement on the exam results is expected to be made by DBE Minister Angie Motshekga on Thursday, with the general result release set for the next day. Despite the approval, Umalusi CEO, Dr Mafu Rakometsi, highlighted some of the challenges faced by learners during the examinations.
These challenges included printing errors, poor print and translation quality, and cultural and political errors in certain exam papers. Rakometsi also expressed concern about the cases of group copying that were detected, urging all role players to put in stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of these errors.
Umalusi has already excluded specific questions affected by errors from the marking process and upscaled the marks achieved using conversion tables. While group copying incidents are lower, Umalusi remains concerned about the number of cases detected, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
Despite these challenges, Rakometsi emphasized that there were no detected cases of paper leakages, ensuring that the credibility and integrity of the exams have not been compromised.
