The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) announces that Professor Thumbi Ndung’u, a leading HIV and tuberculosis (TB) researcher, has been elected to the United States National Academy of Medicine (NAM). This esteemed recognition is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, acknowledging individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. 
Professor Ndung’u serves as the Scientific Director of the HIV Pathogenesis Programme at UKZN and holds the South African Research Chair in Systems Biology of HIV/AIDS. His groundbreaking work includes generating the first primary isolate infectious molecular clone of HIV-1 subtype C, a milestone that has significantly advanced the understanding of the virus and its interaction with host systems. 
In addition to his roles at UKZN, Professor Ndung’u is the Director for Basic and Translational Science at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), Director of the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE), and a Professor of Infectious Diseases at University College London. 
Expressing his gratitude, Professor Ndung’u stated, “I am deeply honoured to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine. This recognition is a testament not only to my work but to the incredible teams and collaborators I have had the privilege to work alongside. Together, we continue to strive toward advancing scientific research that will lead to solutions for some of our most pressing health challenges.” 
UKZN’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Nana Poku, remarked, “Professor Ndung’u’s election to NAM not only celebrates his distinguished career but also brings global recognition to UKZN for its leadership in HIV and TB research. This honour affirms the university’s pivotal role in advancing health science and reinforces our position as a centre of excellence in medical research.” 
The National Academy of Medicine, established in 1970, is an independent organization that provides expert advice on health and medical issues. Election to NAM is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and a profound commitment to advancing public health. 
Professor Ndung’u’s election to NAM underscores his significant contributions to HIV and TB research and highlights the global impact of his work. His dedication to understanding and combating these diseases continues to inspire and drive advancements in medical science.
