Ukrainian F-16 Reportedly Downs Russian Su-34 Fighter-Bomber in Eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian forces reportedly shot down a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber with an F-16 near the frontlines in Eastern Ukraine on October 12, 2024, amid the ongoing conflict. This marks a historic moment as it could be the first confirmed air-to-air victory involving an F-16 in the Ukraine conflict. Although official confirmation from Ukrainian or Russian authorities is pending, pro-Russian military bloggers have shared tributes for the lost Su-34 on various social media platforms.
The Russian Su-34, known for its versatility in carrying out both air-to-ground and air-to-air missions, was allegedly intercepted approximately 30 miles from the frontlines by an F-16 supplied by Denmark. The use of F-16s represents a new phase in NATO’s support to Ukraine, following pledges by Denmark, the Netherlands, and other allies to deliver these advanced fighter jets earlier this year.
