UDM Leader Bantu Holomisa
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa has promised a complete overhaul of the system, aiming at bringing an end to corruption and mismanagement if elected into power. Speaking at the UDM’s manifesto launch at the Gallagher Convention Centre today, Holomisa didn’t hold back in his criticism of the current political climate, highlighting the failures which he insists his party can rectify.
Holomisa’s diatribe against the corruption in South African politics didn’t spare details as he accused the ANC of providing a haven for corrupt people. “Let’s talk for a moment about corruption. Have you ever heard an ANC leader standing at a podium lamenting about corruption? Of course you have — so have I — whilst all the time they and their colleagues are drowning in the graft,” said Holomisa.
The UDM leader directly challenged the ANC’s integrity, stating, “Loyalty is rewarded by the ANC with protection against investigation and prosecution as the culprits who have looted state resources hide behind struggle credentials.”
He was critical of the inaction following the Zondo Commission’s findings, saying, “There is no political will to take the guilty to a court of law and it is for this reason that the Zondo Commission’s report is gathering dust in Parliament.”
Holomisa called out the ruling party for its historical involvement in corrupt activities such as those related to Bosasa, Chancellor House, and the infamous Gupta family, accusing ANC leaders of state capture. He even pointed at the President, claiming, “Even President Ramaphosa declined to release the performance reports of his Cabinet, citing that he is scared these reports will embarrass government and his party.”
The leader of the UDM also touched on the mismanagement of funds, from workers’ UIF contributions to pensions for former government employees and civil servants, and criticized the setbacks in addressing these issues.
NSFAS and SETAs were not spared, with accusations of mismanagement by the ANC, Holomisa stated: “It makes my blood boil to think of how much has been stolen from ordinary South Africans by a political party that is in the business of stealing rather than governing.”
He called upon South Africans not to vote for the ANC out of habit or guilt, emphasizing the need to end the corruption that he believes has infiltrated law enforcement and tarnished South Africa’s image as an investment destination.
Holomisa called for an educational push on how the state and taxes work to fight corruption from the ground up. He particularly highlighted the Eastern Cape’s plight and offered UDM solutions to restore the province’s economic viability.
As a solution, the UDM manifesto promises sweeping changes to eradicate corruption and ensure clean governance, ranging from establishing zero-tolerance policies to developing systems to protect whistleblowers and removing political interference in civil and private sector administration.
“The UDM will reopen the factories and industries closed down by the ANC as well as resuscitate the agricultural projects and the maintenance units that used to maintain the roads, without delay, in order to generate many jobs,” pledged Holomisa, promising economic empowerment and self-sufficiency for Eastern Cape residents.
