Court Crime Arrest convicted bail

Tzaneen

The Tzaneen Regional Court has sent a strong message to would-be rapists by handing down a hefty sentence to Clifford Butana Baloyi, a convicted serial rapist. On Monday, November 13, 2023, Clifford was sentenced to ten years’ and life imprisonment for his heinous crimes.

The court heard that one of the incidents occurred on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at around 3 PM. The victim, a 19-year-old woman, was on her way home from Nwamitwa village to Lwandlamuni village outside Letsitele when she encountered an unknown male suspect. The suspect threatened her with a knife and took her to a nearby river, where he repeatedly raped her.

Furthermore, the court heard that another incident took place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at approximately 3:30 PM. A 14-year-old girl was dragged into the bushes by an unknown male suspect while she was walking from Nwamitwa clinic to her homestead. The case was promptly reported to the Letsitele police station.

Both cases were transferred to the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. Through diligent work and DNA evidence, the investigation team successfully linked these cases to Clifford Butana Baloyi.

Clifford was subsequently arrested on Thursday, April 5, 2018, and his bail application was denied. He remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.

The court has ordered that Clifford’s particulars be included in the National Child Protection Register and the National Register for Sexual Offenders. With his conviction under the provisions of Act 32 of 2007, Clifford is deemed unfit to work with children.

The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the lengthy prison term imposed on Clifford and praised the members involved in securing the conviction. This sentence serves as a strong deterrent to potential rapists and coincides with the 16 Days of Activism campaign against violence towards women and children.
