Journalist Aserie Ndlovu
By Mpho Moloi
Two suspects arrested in connection with the disappearance of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli are set to appear in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga this morning, 12 May 2025. The couple was last seen in Mamelodi, Pretoria, in February 2025, sparking a nationwide investigation. Last week, police uncovered human remains in Rust de Winter, Limpopo, believed to be those of Ndlovu and Mdhluli, marking a grim turn in the case. So far, five individuals have been arrested, and DNA testing is underway to confirm the identities of the remains, a process that could take up to a month, according to National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
Case Background and Arrests
Aserie Ndlovu, a well-known journalist and founder of Capital Live SA 99.0 FM, and Zodwa Mdhluli vanished from Mamelodi, Pretoria, earlier this year. What began as a missing persons case quickly escalated into a kidnapping and carjacking investigation as evidence mounted. The two suspects appearing in court today are among five arrested in connection with the case. Police have revealed that the suspects face serious charges, including kidnapping, carjacking, house robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
The arrests followed an extensive police operation spanning Gauteng and Mpumalanga, with key evidence recovered, such as stolen furniture from the couple’s home and parts of Ndlovu’s vehicle. One suspect, Samuel Mogongwe, allegedly a trusted driver for the Mdhluli family, is believed to be the mastermind behind the crime, adding a layer of betrayal to this tragic story.
Discovery of Human Remains
Last week, authorities made a chilling discovery: human remains located in a thick bush in Rust de Winter, Limpopo, about 70 kilometers from the couple’s home in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga. The find came after one of the suspects reportedly led police to the site. Items found near the remains, including a female’s bathroom robe and shoes, have fueled speculation that they belong to Ndlovu and Mdhluli.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola addressed the nation over the weekend, confirming that DNA testing is in progress to identify the remains. He said, “In terms of the DNA, we will try our best to expedite. But give and take a month to come to the right conclusion. The DNA will take more or less, three to four weeks. We think we will be able to know.” This means families and investigators may need to wait three to four weeks for definitive answers.
Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has deployed a multidisciplinary team to crack the case, including crime and counterintelligence units, cybercrime specialists, and drone pilots. Two additional suspects, Thato David Madisha and Sello “Skhalo” Uoane, remain at large, and police are urging the public to come forward with any information. Contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Maboko, at 072 030 2794, or SAPS at 08600 10111 if you have tips.
The disappearance and suspected deaths of Ndlovu and Mdhluli have shocked South Africa, raising concerns about the safety of journalists and the scourge of violent crime. As the court proceedings begin today, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice and closure in this heartbreaking case.
