Richmond Hill, Eastern Cape – Two suspects are under police guard in hospital after they were shot during an attempted home robbery in Richmond Hill on Tuesday evening. The incident, which took place at around 20:40 on Lutman Street, has left the local community shaken, but no civilians were harmed.
According to Eastern Cape Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the incident unfolded when a 73-year-old homeowner was awoken by a noise coming from inside his house. Armed with his firearm, the elderly man went to investigate the source of the disturbance. As he made his way through his home, he encountered three suspects in the passage.
In a moment of self-defence, the homeowner fired two shots at the intruders, wounding two of them, while the third suspect managed to flee the scene. The swift response by a private security company and Metro police led to the apprehension of the injured suspects, aged 31 and 37.
Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects gained entry to the house by removing a window in the front bedroom. Fortunately, nothing was stolen, and the homeowner did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
“Both suspects are currently under police guard in hospital, where they are being treated for the gunshot wounds. SAPS Humewood is investigating a case of housebreaking and attempted murder,” said Captain Janse Van Rensburg.
