A mortar attack by the M23 rebels in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 25 June 2024 has resulted in the deaths of two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers, and twenty others injured. The incident occurred at one of the SANDF bases in Sake, according to an official statement issued by SANDF.
Details of the Attack
The SANDF confirmed the devastating mortar attack at the Sake base, which led to two fatalities and critically injured four other soldiers who are now receiving medical treatment. The remaining soldiers, who sustained minor injuries, are expected to be discharged soon. The SANDF has assured that the families of the deceased soldiers have been informed, and formal procedures to repatriate their remains are underway. The names of the fallen heroes will be communicated in due course.
Context of the Conflict
Last month, Sake found itself under heavy bombardment by the M23 rebels, sparking a fierce counterattack involving the FARDC, SAMIDRC, and Wazelendo militia. While the M23 rebels assert that the government forces and SAMIDRC initiated the conflict, the resulting chaos saw significant damage to military assets. A South African Mfezi armoured ambulance and a Casspir vehicle were among those damaged or abandoned, alongside a Tanzanian IVECO truck loaded with ammunition. Disturbingly, video footage later surfaced showing the Casspir in the hands of the rebels.
A day following the assault, the M23 rebels further inflamed the situation by releasing a statement claiming responsibility for attacking and setting fire to a SANDF armoured vehicle in Mubambiro, on the periphery of Goma. They also shared a video purportedly showing the burning vehicle at the base, forcing SAMIDRC vehicles to retreat to Goma city centre.
SANDF’s Commitment and Response
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reinforced the country’s commitment to the mission in the DRC, pledging up to 2,900 SANDF soldiers to assist SAMIDRC until mid-December. The South African government remains resolute in its support for regional stability, despite the escalating challenges posed by rebel factions.
