Two Men Nabbed in Connection with Brutal Murder of 64-Year-Old Khanyisile Ngwane in Her Hibberdene Home

In a breakthrough for a shocking murder case that has gripped the Hibberdene community, KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested two men linked to the killing of 64-year-old Khanyisile Ngwane. The arrests, made on Thursday, 23 October 2025, come after Ngwane’s body was found in a pool of blood inside her Mthwalume home on 14 October, with her residence also ransacked. The suspects, aged 24 and 36, face charges of murder and possession of stolen property, marking a step towards justice for a crime that has left family and neighbours reeling.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by elderly residents in rural areas, where home invasions and violent robberies remain a persistent threat. As investigations continue, police have recovered items believed to have been taken from Ngwane’s home, offering hope that more details will emerge to bring full closure to her loved ones.

Discovery of the Crime: A Gruesome Scene in Mthwalume

Khanyisile Ngwane’s lifeless body was discovered on the morning of 14 October 2025, inside her home in the quiet Mthwalume area near Hibberdene. Police were called to the scene after concerned neighbours raised the alarm, only to find the 64-year-old in a pool of blood, with clear signs of a violent struggle. Her home had been turned upside down, with valuable items missing, pointing to a robbery gone fatally wrong.

Initial investigations revealed that Ngwane, who lived alone, may have been targeted for her possessions. The brutality of the attack has shocked the close-knit community, where such violent crimes against the elderly are rare but deeply felt. Family members identified her at the scene, adding to the heartbreak as they grapple with the sudden loss.

Swift Police Action: Arrests and Recovery of Stolen Goods

Acting on leads from the crime scene, Hibberdene police zeroed in on suspects in the Nyangwini area. On 23 October, they arrested the 24-year-old man, who was found with property suspected to have been stolen from Ngwane’s home. Valuable items were recovered during the bust, linking him directly to the robbery.

Later that same day, the 36-year-old suspect was taken into custody, facing the murder charge head-on. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the arrests, noting that both men were swiftly processed. “Police were summoned to the crime scene, and initial investigations revealed that the victim’s residence was also robbed of valuable items,” Magwaza said. Cases of murder and house robbery were opened at the Hibberdene police station, ensuring a thorough probe.

The quick turnaround in arrests has been praised by locals, who hope it signals stronger law enforcement in the region. However, questions remain about possible accomplices or motives beyond simple theft.

Court Appearance Looming: What Happens Next for the Accused

The two suspects are scheduled to appear in the uMzumbe Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 October 2025. They will face formal charges of murder and possession of stolen property, with prosecutors expected to outline the evidence gathered so far. Bail applications may be contested, given the severity of the crimes and the community’s outcry for justice.

Legal experts suggest the case could move quickly if the recovered items and witness statements hold up. For Ngwane’s family, the court date offers a chance to begin the healing process, though the pain of her loss lingers.

Community Impact: A Call for Vigilance Against Home Invasions

Ngwane’s murder has rattled the Hibberdene and Mthwalume areas, where elderly residents often live alone and feel vulnerable to crime. Neighbours have shared stories of increased fear, with some forming watch groups to keep an eye out for suspicious activity. Community leaders are urging better lighting, more police patrols, and support for seniors to prevent similar tragedies.

This case also shines a light on the broader issue of violent robberies in KwaZulu-Natal, where home invasions have spiked in recent years. Police have stepped up operations, but residents call for more resources to tackle root causes like poverty and unemployment that fuel such crimes.
