Zamdela Community Shocked by Fatal Fire at Boiketlong Flats


ZAMDELA, FREE STATE – Tragedy struck Boiketlong Flats in Zamdela on Friday night, when a fire claimed the lives of two individuals. Zamdela police have opened an inquest docket following the incident, which occurred on 02 August 2024, around 21:00. The deceased, a male and a female, were found on the second floor of block D, which was engulfed in flames.

Preliminary Investigation and Allegations

According to a preliminary investigation, it is alleged that Boiketlong Flats were not intended for residential use. Instead, the property was reportedly frequented by individuals without the owner’s permission. These allegations raise concerns about the safety and legality of the building’s use, shedding light on possible illegal activities within the premises.

Police Patrol and Discovery

Police Spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani for the Fezile Dabi district provided details on the incident. “On Friday, 02 August 2024, at about 21:00, the police were patrolling around Zamdela when they noticed smoke coming from Boiketlong Flats. On arrival, they noticed that the second floor of block D flats was on fire,” she said.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found the two unknown individuals. Unfortunately, both were certified dead by the emergency services team. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

Ongoing Investigation

Sergeant Rani stated, “The two unknown people were certified dead by emergency services. The cause of the fire is unknown, and investigation still continues. The particulars and age of those deceased will be known as soon as they are officially identified.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident or the identities of the deceased to come forward. The community’s cooperation is crucial in uncovering the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
