Two City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) municipality officials have been arrested on allegations of stealing diesel that belonged to the municipality. This comes as a major blow to the integrity and trust in the municipal officials responsible for managing public resources.

The arrests were made following a well-coordinated sting operation conducted at an agricultural holding by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, various law enforcement agencies, and private security stakeholders. The operation also led to the arrest of the owner of a private bus fleet company and two of his employees who were involved in offloading the stolen diesel at the Springs Depot.

The arrests were the result of an ongoing intelligence-driven operation that had been surveilling the city’s vehicles, mainly trucks, which were seen offloading diesel at the private facility. The illicit operation had been running for several months, leading to a significant loss of public resources.

The municipality has expressed concern over the looting of diesel from its resources, stating that it is unclear how the theft was carried out. The modus operandi involved filling up the municipal trucks at the depots each morning, offloading the fuel at the private facility, and then returning the vehicles empty to refill the next morning, all while getting paid for the stolen fuel.

Isaac Mapiyeye, the municipality’s Police Chief, has vowed to pursue further arrests and hold all those involved accountable for their actions. He emphasized that the police, working alongside the fleet management team of the city, will not rest until all those involved in such illicit acts are behind bars.
