Ethekwini Street Lights

Two suspects have been arrested and charged with the possession of stolen goods, including 52 street lights belonging to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. The estimated value of the stolen items is R1.9 million.

The incident took place at the Kosi Bay port of entry, where border guards intercepted the state property that was en route to Mozambique on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The suspects, who were in a grey Isuzu bakkie driven by a Mozambican national, were searched by the authorities upon arrival at the border.

As soon as the discovery was made, the border guards swiftly coordinated with the Hawks and Durban metro police. The two Mozambicans were apprehended and charged not only with possession of stolen goods but also with damaging essential infrastructure.

Both the vehicle and the stolen property were confiscated by the Border Management Authority (BMA) and handed over to the Manguzi South African Police Service (SAPS). The Hawks are now in charge of further investigating the case.

Dr Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the BMA, expressed his admiration for the border guards’ exceptional commitment to deterring illegal activities and safeguarding state assets. He emphasized the vital role played by these guards in maintaining the integrity of the nation’s borders and upholding immigration laws.
