Twenty people have been hospitalised following a collision on the M4 Southbound at Himalayas Road in Durban.
A taxi and a light motor vehicle reportedly crashed on the freeway this morning. ALS Paramedics director Garrith Jamieson says authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
Incident Overview
Early this morning, a serious accident occurred on the M4 Southern Freeway Southbound near the Himalayas Road exit in Durban. The collision involved a fully loaded taxi and a light motor vehicle, leading to significant disruptions and a massive emergency response.
Emergency Response
Upon receiving reports of the accident, multiple emergency services, including ALS Paramedics, rushed to the scene. According to ALS Paramedics director Garrith Jamieson, the scene was chaotic, with numerous injured individuals requiring immediate medical attention. Paramedics stabilised the injured on-site before transporting them to various hospitals across Durban.
Injuries and Casualties
The collision resulted in twenty individuals being hospitalised. The injured parties, who were passengers in both vehicles, sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Medical teams provided on-site treatment before transferring the patients to nearby medical facilities for further care.
Traffic Disruptions
The accident led to significant traffic congestion on the M4 Southbound. Durban Metro Police Service issued a traffic alert advising motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes to prevent delays. Authorities worked diligently to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. Factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, and driver behaviour will be examined to establish the events leading up to the accident. ALS Paramedics director Garrith Jamieson confirmed that all necessary authorities are involved in the investigation.
Historical Context
This incident is not isolated; the M4 freeway has witnessed multiple accidents in recent times. For instance, a month ago, fifteen school children were injured in a taxi accident on the M4 Northbound before the M41 in Umhlanga. Additionally, three days ago, a multiple-vehicle accident occurred on the M4 Northbound near Edwin Swales Drive, involving a taxi that lost control and crashed into two other vehicles. These recurring incidents highlight the need for enhanced road safety measures on this busy freeway.
