Tshwane Warns Against Waste Collector Extortion Amid Festive Season Complaints

City of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane has issued a stern warning to residents about reports of municipal waste collectors demanding “Christmas gifts” in exchange for providing essential waste collection services. These allegations have sparked outrage among city officials, who see such actions as a breach of ethical conduct.

City Officials Condemn Unethical Practices

Corporate Services MMC Kholofelo Morodi expressed dismay over these incidents, emphasising that municipal employees must perform their duties without expecting personal benefits.

“If this practice has been the norm, it must come to an immediate end,” stated Morodi. “Such behaviour is tantamount to extortion, as it creates fear among residents that their garbage might not be collected if they do not comply with these ‘Christmas present’ demands.”

Morodi encouraged residents to take a proactive approach by reporting such incidents to the City of Tshwane’s Anti-Fraud Hotline at 080 874 9263 or informing their local councillors.

A Widespread Issue in Waste Services

This issue is not unique to Tshwane. Similar complaints have emerged in Johannesburg, where Pikitup employees have reportedly demanded festive “gifts” from residents before collecting refuse. This concerning trend raises questions about the potential normalisation of unethical practices within municipal waste services across the country.

Tshwane’s Stance on Integrity and Accountability

The City of Tshwane has made its position clear: it will not tolerate extortion or unethical behaviour among its employees. Officials have reiterated the need to uphold trust between residents and the municipality while ensuring that public servants remain accountable.

Morodi reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to addressing the issue, stating, “We remain committed to creating a transparent, accountable, and efficient public service that prioritises the needs and well-being of all Tshwane residents.”
