Tshwane Police
In a bold push to clean up the streets, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane rounded up 251 wanted suspects during a zero-tolerance operation on Saturday, 25 October 2025. This large-scale effort, aimed at tackling serious crimes like murder and rape, brought together multiple agencies for a full day of tracing, arrests, and checks. Led by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, the operation focused on the Garsfontein and Boschkop areas, sending a strong message that criminals have no place to hide. With over 600 people searched and illegal liquor seized, the blitz not only netted big arrests but also boosted safety in hotspots across the city. This comes amid ongoing national drives to cut crime, showing real teamwork between police and communities.
Operation Overview: A United Front Against Crime
The crackdown was a joint mission involving SAPS, the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Community Safety, the Department of Correctional Services, and local Community Policing Forum members. Coordinated under Major-General Thine, it ran all day in Garsfontein and Boschkop precincts, with teams splitting into tracing units, patrols, and roadblocks. This was part of broader efforts like Operation Shanela, which has seen thousands arrested nationwide in recent weeks.
In related actions across Tshwane, TMPD officers in Pretoria North, Hatfield, and Hammanskraal targeted drunk driving and by-law breaches. At a roadblock on the R80 highway and Bremer Road, they nabbed four drunk drivers, while another 10 suspected impaired motorists were pulled over. TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba stressed their goal: “We remain committed to fighting injustices caused by impaired drivers to ensure road safety.” In Hammanskraal, three people were arrested for breaking the Immigration Act during business checks, with warnings issued to non-compliant owners. A by-law operation in Bronkhorstspruit saw metro police inspect shops, cut illegal electricity hook-ups, and seize cables.
Key Arrests: From Murder to Drugs
Detectives took the lead, tracking down and arresting 251 wanted suspects tied to heavy crimes. These included seven for murder, one for attempted murder, two for armed robbery, and nine for rape. As the day went on, more arrests followed: one for fraud, two for assault, one for malicious damage to property, and one for theft. One man was caught with 49 ziplock bags of dagga and cash, leading to charges for possession and dealing in drugs.
TMPD added to the tally with 34 arrests for driving under the influence and one for public drinking. In total, SAPS reported 328 suspects arrested across the operation, showing the wide net cast to snag offenders.
Detentions, Searches, and Patrols
Evening patrols stepped up the heat, with two teams and a roadblock stopping traffic and checking papers. This resulted in 42 undocumented foreign nationals being detained and handed to Home Affairs for processing and possible deportation. Officers searched 608 people and 242 vehicles in total, keeping a sharp eye on trouble spots. They hit 16 known hotspots with high-visibility patrols to scare off would-be criminals.
TMPD issued 143 infringement notices for road rule breaks, raking in fines worth thousands. Traffic cops also handed out six AARTO notices valued at R4,000.
Seizures and Compliance Checks: Liquor and Dagga Confiscated
Teams checked 11 liquor spots for Liquor Act rules. Three were shut down for breaking the law, and police seized 110,520 ml of booze. Nine people got fines for drinking in public. The dagga bust added to the haul, with bags and cash taken as evidence.
These actions tie into bigger drives against illegal trade and unsafe drinking spots, which often fuel crime in townships.
Statements from Officials: Thanks for Teamwork
Major-General Thine praised the partners: “I would like to thank all participating departments and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and dedication in ensuring the safety and security of Tshwane residents.” SAPS spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk shared details, noting the operation’s focus on serious offences.
Mahamba from TMPD echoed the call for safe roads, urging drivers to think twice before drinking and driving.
