Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya
Pretoria – Tshwane’s Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya has been honoured as Woman of the Year at the 2025 Black Twitter Awards, recognising her standout leadership and ability to engage with the public in a year marked by political shifts under the Government of National Unity (GNU). The award celebrates her for successfully entertaining Black Twitter throughout 2025, regardless of the challenges posed by the GNU. Moya, who took office in October 2024 as ActionSA’s candidate, expressed her joy on X, saying: “012, Tshwane, Pitori, Pirara, Pretoria, Jacaranda City, Capital of the Republic — we brought it back! What an honour, President and Deputy President. We continue to serve; the mandate is to translate the love for the RSA into action 🇿🇦❤️🇿🇦”. Chris Excel, the awards’ president, praised her in a reply: “She uplifts leads with heart she bring change”. This accolade comes as Moya leads efforts to turn around Tshwane’s finances and services, inspiring many young women in politics. As South Africa’s social media scene continues to shape public opinion, Moya’s win highlights how online engagement can boost real-world impact, especially in a city facing water crises and infrastructure woes.
Moya’s Journey to the Mayoral Seat
Dr Nasiphi Moya’s rise to Tshwane’s top job is a story of determination and focus on community needs. Born and raised in the capital, she holds a doctorate in public administration and has worked in various roles, including as a researcher and activist. Before becoming mayor, she served as ActionSA’s Gauteng chairperson, pushing for clean governance and better services in townships.
Her election in October 2024 made her the first woman to lead Tshwane, a historic moment in a city of over four million people. Moya took over amid tough times, with the metro facing R14.4 billion in wasteful spending probes and ongoing water shortages. She has since led clean-up drives, arrested officials in a R1.3 billion fraud case, and worked to collect outstanding debts to steady the city’s books. Her hands-on style, often shared on social media, has won her fans who see her as a fresh voice in politics.
The Black Twitter Awards: Celebrating Online Influence
The Black Twitter Awards honour South Africans who make waves on X, formerly Twitter, in categories like entertainment, activism, and leadership. Started in 2018, the awards celebrate how Black Twitter – a lively online space for debates, humour, and calls for change – shapes culture and politics. This year’s event recognised those who kept engaging despite the GNU’s new dynamics after the 2024 elections.
Moya’s Woman of the Year title praises her for keeping Black Twitter buzzing with her updates on city fixes and calls for unity. The certificate says she “has successfully entertained Black Twitter in year 2025 regardless of the GNU.” This nod shows how her online presence, with over 50,000 followers, has helped her connect with young voters and push for accountability.
Moya’s Response and Vision for Tshwane
Moya’s happy reaction on X shows her pride in the honour and her drive to keep serving. Her post lists Tshwane’s nicknames, showing her love for the city and its people. She sees the award as a push to translate online support into real action, like fixing roads and water in areas like Mamelodi and Soshanguve.
Since taking office, Moya has focused on key issues. She led a R30 million debt collection drive that recovered funds for services. Her team has arrested officials in corruption cases, showing a zero-tolerance stance. She has also pushed for better public transport and green spaces to make the city livable for all.
Critics say she faces big hurdles, like fixing a R4 billion budget hole and dealing with coalition politics. But her win at the awards shows she has strong backing from online communities who value her open style.
