Tsakane Police Sergeant
By Nkosana Khumalo
A Tsakane police sergeant is now under disciplinary review after a video surfaced online showing her slapping a member of the public at the Tsakane police station. The incident, captured in a short clip that quickly went viral on social media, has sparked widespread criticism of the police’s handling of gender-based violence (GBV) cases and raised questions about accountability within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
In the video, a man can be seen entering the Tsakane police station, questioning officers about a GBV case involving a woman who allegedly sought assistance at the station but was reportedly denied help. The man confronts the officers, expressing frustration over what he describes as negligence, and accuses them of ignoring the woman’s plea for assistance until she eventually fell asleep at the station.
The footage shows the sergeant, identifiable in her SAPS uniform, approaching the man and, after a heated exchange, slapping and pushing him. She then advances toward the individual recording the video, seemingly attempting to confiscate the cellphone capturing the incident.
Public Outcry and SAPS Response
The video has sparked intense public backlash, with many South Africans expressing anger over the officer’s actions and the police station’s alleged disregard for a GBV case. South Africa’s high levels of gender-based violence have already put police response under scrutiny, and this incident has intensified calls for better training, accountability, and respect for victims seeking police assistance.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi acknowledged the video’s contents, condemning the behaviour displayed by the sergeant. Nevhuhulwi emphasised that “this behaviour is uncalled for and the SAPS code of conduct advocates for clients to be treated with respect and integrity at all times.” She confirmed that an internal disciplinary case has been opened against the officer and that both the sergeant and the member of the public have laid charges of assault and crimen injuria against each other.
