TS Galaxy vs Durban City
By Sello Masilo
TS Galaxy’s Nedbank Cup journey ended in heartbreak as they squandered a lead to lose 2-1 against Durban City after extra time in the Round of 32 at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday, February 14.
Adnan Beganovic suffered his first defeat since taking charge of the Rockets in November, despite his side initially taking the lead through Dzenan Zajmovic early in the second half. However, Joslin Kamatuka equalised in the 79th minute, and Senzo Ndlovu completed the comeback with a decisive goal in the 107th minute to send the Motsepe Foundation Championship leaders into the next round.
Galaxy’s Unbeaten Run Ends in Cup Upset
Coming into the fixture, TS Galaxy had enjoyed a 14-match unbeaten run across all competitions, while Durban City had momentum in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, winning their last two matches to establish a five-point lead at the top of the table.
Galaxy looked sharp in the first half and came closest to opening the scoring when Damir Sovsic rattled the top of the crossbar with a powerful first-time shot following a clever flick from Zajmovic.
However, neither side could break the deadlock before halftime, and Durban City head coach Simo Dladla made three substitutions at the start of the second half, introducing Kamatuka, Saziso Magawana, and Athini Jodwana to inject energy into his team.
Zajmovic Breaks Deadlock, but Durban City Fight Back
Despite the changes, it was TS Galaxy who struck first just four minutes after the restart, as Zajmovic found the net with a composed finish from a Puso Dithejane assist, marking his third goal in the competition.
Durban City responded with intent, creating several chances before Kamatuka eventually levelled matters in the 79th minute with a clinical strike, continuing his impressive form in front of goal.
Ndlovu’s Extra-Time Winner Seals Durban City’s Progress
With the game heading into extra time, Galaxy pushed forward aggressively in search of a winner, leaving space at the back. Their attacking approach backfired when Ndlovu capitalised on an opportunity in the 107th minute, slotting the ball past Jiri Ciupa to complete the turnaround and dump the Betway Premiership side out of the competition.
