ANC
Trust in ANC secured as party retains wards in Chris Hani and Sekhukhune, with decisive by-election victories in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo confirming public support for the organisation’s renewal efforts and commitment to effective local governance. The African National Congress celebrated these wins on Thursday, 4 September 2025, highlighting how communities in Ward 4 of the Emalahleni Sub-Region in Chris Hani and Ward 34 of the Fetakgomo Tubatse Sub-Region in Sekhukhune chose the ANC as their dependable partner for progress, amid a broader narrative of transformation and service delivery.
ANC’s Strong Performance in Eastern Cape By-Election
In the Eastern Cape, the ANC achieved a resounding victory in Ward 4 of the Emalahleni Sub-Region within the Chris Hani Region, securing 92% of the vote against the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), which garnered 8%. This by-election, held on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, followed special votes on Tuesday, 2 September, and came after a period of preparation by the ANC’s regional structures. The ward, part of the Cacadu area in Emalahleni, saw voters reaffirm their faith in the ANC, reflecting the party’s deep roots in the community and its focus on addressing local challenges.
The ANC’s national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu, emphasised that these results underscore the public’s unwavering support. “The people of South Africa have made their choice crystal clear that they place their faith and trust in the ANC,” the party stated in its release. This win is particularly significant in the Chris Hani Region, named after the iconic anti-apartheid leader, where the ANC has historically maintained strong influence. The region recently held its Regional General Council on Monday, 8 September 2025, to prepare for national engagements, showing ongoing organisational vitality.
Voter turnout details for this specific ward were not immediately available from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), but the election process included the proclamation and nomination opening on 25 July 2025, with a provisional voters’ roll notice shortly after. The ANC’s campaign in the area focused on renewal, with volunteers and activists playing a key role in mobilising support. This victory adds to the party’s momentum as it gears up for future polls, including the 2026 local government elections.
Convincing Win in Limpopo Amid Competitive Field
In Limpopo, the ANC retained Ward 34 in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Sub-Region of Sekhukhune with an impressive 79% of the vote, up from 76% in the 2021 local government elections. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) placed second with 15%, a decrease from 19% in 2021, while the Defenders of the People (DOP) received 4%, and both the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Bolsheviks got 1% each. This by-election was necessitated by the death of the previous ward councillor following a short illness, prompting a contest in this rural area along the chrome belt on the R37 road.
The ward encompasses villages like Atok, Bogalatladi, Mashikwe, and Monametse, where Sepedi is the dominant language. The ANC performed exceptionally well in Mashikwe, securing 94% of votes, while the EFF’s strongest showing was 30% in Monametse. Voter turnout reached 50%, an improvement from 46% in the prior election, indicating heightened community engagement. In comparison, during the 2024 provincial elections, the ANC won 82% in the ward, with the EFF at 13%, showing consistency in support.
The IEC confirmed readiness for the poll, with eleven candidates from seven parties contesting across various by-elections on the same day. The ANC’s Sekhukhune Regional Elections Team conducted a final push on 1 August 2025, rallying at Monametse to bolster their candidate. This win highlights the party’s ability to maintain dominance in traditional strongholds, even as allies like the SACP struggled to make an impact.
Broader Implications for ANC Renewal and Governance
These victories come as a powerful prelude to the Special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Local Government and the Roll Call of Councillors Meeting, where the ANC will refine its agenda for service delivery, sharpen interventions, and accelerate development in line with its renewal mandate. The party views the results as a testament to its passionate leadership and the people’s loyalty, with congratulations extended to Councillors Thembinkosi Klaas and Councillor Mahlatse Mathipa for their election wins.
Nationally, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula shared the outcomes on social media, noting the decisive nature of the wins and reinforcing the party’s renewal narrative. “The ANC is not just trusted but passionately loved by the people as their movement for liberation and transformation,” the statement read. This sentiment echoes earlier successes, such as the ANC’s gains in April 2025 by-elections, where it demonstrated growing strength toward 2026.
The outcomes starkly contradict narratives of decline pushed by naysayers and hostile forces, including opinion polls that have questioned the ANC’s stability. Instead, they affirm the party’s role as a united, effective instrument for delivering results, with every ward retained and every mandate renewed recommitting to intensifying local government and ensuring people’s needs come first.
