Trump Says Elon Musk Should Not Be Allowed to See Top-Secret War Plans With China

Top-Secret War Plans

President Donald Trump stated on Friday that Elon Musk should not be granted access to top-secret U.S. plans concerning any potential conflict with China, acknowledging that the billionaire’s extensive business ties could present conflicts of interest. The statement has since sent shockwaves across diplomatic, political, and technological circles, raising new questions about national security, private sector influence, and the future of civil-military relations in the United States.

This unprecedented and rare public admission by Trump sheds light on the complicated intersection between private enterprise and public power — particularly in matters involving global geopolitics, where private citizens like Musk wield enormous influence due to their technological capabilities and economic reach.

Trump Denies Musk Briefing on Pentagon’s “Top-Secret” China War Plans

In a firm and direct response to a media storm sparked by a New York Times report, Trump vehemently denied that Musk would receive a classified Pentagon briefing on America’s war strategy concerning China. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said:

“I don’t want to show it to anybody. You’re talking about a potential war with China. Certainly you wouldn’t show it to a businessman who is helping us so much… Elon has businesses in China and he would be susceptible perhaps to that.”

This statement marked one of Trump’s most candid acknowledgements of potential ethical and national security concerns tied to Musk’s dual role — as a massive private contractor to the U.S. government and an international businessman with operations in China.

The strong wording also appeared to be a direct response to The New York Times’ claims that Musk was scheduled for a classified intelligence briefing in the Pentagon’s secure chamber known as “The Tank,” focused on maritime tactics and targeting plans related to a potential confrontation with China. According to the Times, the meeting was “abruptly cancelled” after news of it became public.

“They Really Are the Enemy of the People”

Trump used the occasion to once again blast The New York Times, saying:

“They really are the enemy of the people.”

This phrase, often used by Trump in his past criticism of the press, underscores his longstanding adversarial stance toward certain U.S. media institutions. While many within the administration backed Trump’s assertion that Musk would not be privy to classified briefings, the controversy over the report has raised further scrutiny over Musk’s expanding role in the Trump-led government.

Elon Musk’s Visit to the Pentagon and DOGE Appointment

Trump’s denial came just hours after Musk was seen at the Pentagon. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is currently heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency created under Trump’s new administration to streamline government spending, cut waste, and reduce bureaucracy — including within the Department of Defense.

The role gives Musk a non-traditional but powerful advisory platform in U.S. federal policy-making, without requiring the rigorous background checks or official vetting that typically come with senior government appointments.

Although the visit was officially described as a non-classified meeting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the meeting, describing it on social media as an “amazing visit.” Hegseth said:

“I look forward to continuing our work together.”

This statement suggests that Musk’s involvement in defense-related efficiency reforms will continue despite public controversy.

Musk Responds on X: “Pure Propaganda”

Musk, never one to shy away from controversy, responded directly to the story on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Refuting claims that the Pentagon intended to brief him on classified war plans, Musk wrote:

“I’ve been to the Pentagon many times over many years. Not my first time in the building.”

He added that the New York Times’ report was “pure propaganda,” accusing the paper of attempting to manufacture a scandal.

Musk’s response has only intensified debates about media ethics, public transparency, and private influence in government — particularly in matters involving national security.

Business Interests in China and Potential “Conflicts of Interest”

While Trump has consistently referred to Musk as a “patriot,” concerns persist about the CEO’s business interests in China, especially considering Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory and SpaceX’s sensitive U.S. defense contracts.

Tesla has a massive footprint in China. The company’s Gigafactory in Shanghai is one of its largest manufacturing plants, producing thousands of vehicles each week for the Asian market. Tesla’s strong Chinese sales performance has kept it in fierce competition with domestic EV giants like BYD.

However, these deep business ties also make Musk, in Trump’s words, “susceptible perhaps” to Chinese influence — a statement that appears to acknowledge Musk’s vulnerability to pressure from Chinese authorities due to his vested interests in the region.

Musk has previously sparked controversy by suggesting that Taiwan — a self-ruled island that China claims as its own — should be part of China, aligning more closely with Beijing’s stance on the matter than Washington’s.

SpaceX, Musk’s private aerospace company, holds billions of dollars in U.S. government contracts, including those involving military satellite launches, missile defense systems, and the operation of Starlink — a satellite internet service with increasing relevance in global communications and warfare.

Starlink has already played pivotal roles in Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion by providing resilient, on-the-ground communications for Ukrainian military and civilians. Given such precedent, the idea that Musk could wield strategic communications tools during geopolitical conflict further amplifies the debate around public-private boundaries.

Democratic lawmakers have raised red flags about the potential for national security breaches, especially with Musk accessing internal government discussions and reforms while managing technologies that are integrated into U.S. military operations.

Blurred Lines Between Business and Government

Under the Trump administration, the boundaries between government policy and corporate involvement have become increasingly blurred. Musk has been central to this evolution.

Besides his leadership role in DOGE, Musk has also been vocally supported by Trump for the work Tesla and SpaceX are doing. At a recent public appearance, Trump even suggested deporting those who vandalise Tesla cars over Musk’s perceived closeness to the White House — proposing they be sent to prisons in El Salvador.

Such extreme comments are consistent with Trump’s often fiery rhetoric but also highlight how central Musk has become to the administration’s public image and agenda.

The Global Strategic Landscape: China, Taiwan, and Technology

The broader geopolitical context of U.S.-China tensions makes the issue particularly sensitive. Since Trump’s return to power, his administration has taken a hardline stance against Beijing, labelling China the top strategic competitor to the United States.

This includes renewed trade tariffs, expanded military alliances in the Indo-Pacific, and increased military readiness in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. The idea that a U.S. official — even an informal one like Musk — with massive Chinese business links could be involved in internal military strategy discussions has raised alarms not just domestically, but also among America’s allies.

The Taiwan issue remains particularly fraught. According to reports by the Wall Street Journal, Musk recently confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin urged him not to activate Starlink over Taiwan — a request Musk reportedly complied with.

The notion that a private American citizen is engaged in dialogue with foreign leaders about sensitive geopolitical topics only deepens the concerns surrounding Musk’s involvement in U.S. defense strategy.

Democratic and Republican Divides

While Trump and his Republican base remain largely supportive of Musk, Democrats have seized on the controversy as evidence of dangerous cronyism.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), said in a statement:

“It is deeply concerning that an unelected individual who heads companies with major federal contracts and significant foreign ties could have access to sensitive information.”

Others have demanded that Musk be subjected to formal background checks before being granted any advisory access to federal departments.
