U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed plans to rebrand the Department of Defense (DoD) as the “Department of War” to project a more formidable image of American military strength. The White House announced that, via executive order, the “Department of War” will serve as a secondary title—usable in official communication, ceremonies, public documents, and other non-statutory settings .

What the Executive Order Will Do

• Authorise the use of “Secretary of War” in place of Secretary of Defense where appropriate .
• Direct Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to recommend legislative and executive actions to make the renaming permanent .
• Encourage federal agencies across the executive branch to recognise and accommodate these secondary titles in all internal and external communications .

Historical and Symbolic Underpinnings

The name “Department of War” was historically used from 1789 to 1947, before a major post-World War II reorganisation created the National Military Establishment, later renamed the Department of Defense in 1949 .

President Trump emphasised the symbolism, stating that the U.S. achieved its greatest victories under the “War” title and calling the current name too “defensive” and lacking in strength .

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has echoed this sentiment by championing a renewed “warrior ethos” within the Pentagon, distancing from what he deems “wokeness and weakness” .

Hurdles Ahead

A formal name change would require congressional approval under U.S. law, as only legislation can legally rename federal agencies .
There are also practical cost implications—updating signage, stationery, digital platforms, and military installations globally would be expensive .

Although Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers, it is uncertain whether Congressional leaders will embrace this symbolic rebrand .
